David Bednar gets four-out save versus Cubs

Bednar came in to clean up a mess in the eighth, and while he did issue a walk to load the bases, he was able to escape. This makes back-to-back four-out saves for the right-hander, and he’s up to 25 saves on the campaign.

Bednar allowed a single to Pedro Ramírez, but otherwise buzzed through the top of the Cubs order on Friday. He is 2-0 with eight saves and a 1.04 ERA in his last 15 appearances. Pretty, pretty good pitcher.

Bednar gave up a two-run homer to Chase Meidroth, but fortunately for him, fantasy managers and the Yankees it came with New York possessing a three-run lead. He did strike out three in the outing, but fantasy players would likely prefer a scoreless outing with no punchouts. Still, it’s another save for the 31-year-old, and Bednar is now up to 22 on the season.

Bednar’s save was his 21st of the season. A save situation arose in the ninth inning after Colson Montgomery reached on an error to make it a 9-5 game with runners on the corners and two outs. Bednar came in and struck out Chase Meidroth to end the game. He has a 2.40 ERA and only two blown save opportunities this year.

It was Bednar’s 20th straight scoreless appearance. His last blown save came way back on May 17. This was Bednar’s second straight day pitching, so he’ll likely be off Sunday. Fernando Cruz might get a chance to close then.

Bednar blanked the Phillies in his lone inning of work to secure the 1-0 shutout win for the Yankees. Bednar needed just nine pitches to get through the inning and used five of those pitches to strike out Bryce Harper. Bednar is a perfect three-for-three in save opportunities this month and hasn’t allowed an earned run over 8 2/3 innings.

Cruz picked up his second save of the season with David Bednar presumably unavailable to pitch against his former club following a 32-pitch effort during Sunday’s doubleheader against the Dodgers. The 36-year-old will continue to vulture the occasional save chance when the opportunity arises.

Bednar relieved Fernando Cruz with two on in a tie game in the eighth and stranded both runners before Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a go-ahead homer in the bottom of the inning. In the ninth, Bednar walked Freddie Freeman in a 10-pitch at-bat to start the frame, but he retired three in a row afterwards. It’s Bednar’s second win to go along with two saves this month. He was forced to throw 32 pitches, but since he had a week off coming into the night, perhaps he’ll be available again Monday.

Bednar took the mound in the bottom of the ninth to close out the game against the Nationals with a two-run lead. He recorded two quick outs, then gave up a base hit to James Wood before inducing a groundout to end the game with his 18th save. Bednar has made 16 consecutive appearances without allowing an earned run, giving him a 2.70 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, and a 45/12 K/BB ratio across 40 innings.

He sat down six Nationals batters in order despite striking out nobody. The Yankees were taxed from a bullpen game last night and had already used Fernando Cruz, the other pitcher who didn’t throw yesterday, earlier in the game. Bednar came in with the Yankees behind 3-2 in the eighth, then Jazz Chisholm staked the Yankees to the lead in the ninth and Bednar was able to finish things off in the bottom of the inning for a win. Not exactly the save we were hunting for, but it surely doesn’t hurt your fantasy team.
