Rays land Freddy Peralta, send prospects to Mets

Peralta gave up three hits, walked none and struck out seven. He improved to 7-11 on the season with the win. Peralta allowed a solo home run in the first inning before settling in and putting up a quality start. He has a 4.62 ERA and 27 strikeouts in 33 1/3 innings over six starts since coming to the Rays at the trade deadline. Peralta has a 4.96 ERA this year. He’s lined up to face the Braves on the road next week.

Seymour relentlessly pounded the strike zone, throwing 65 of 88 pitches for strikes, while notching his second double-digit strikeout performance of the season. He generated an absurd 19 swinging strikes, including 12 on his fastball and changeup combination, to finish with a near-elite 36 percent CSW. He limited New York’s lineup to just a single run into the middle innings before coughing up a solo homer to Mark Vientos in the seventh. He was charged with an additional run after teammate Casey Legumina gave up an RBI single to Francisco Alvarez later in the frame. The 27-year-old southpaw has allowed three earned runs or more in four consecutive starts since August 9. He’s offset that by striking out at least seven batters in four of those five outings. He’ll close out a two-start week with a road matchup against the Rangers on Sunday.

Peralta allowed just two hits and no walks while striking out four. He posted a 62 percent strike rate with a 30 percent CSW and a 12 percent swinging strike rate on the day. This was easily his best performance as a member of the Rays, and the first time he’s allowed no runs in a start since June 25th. Actually, it’s only the third time he’s allowed no runs in a start all season. As we expected, the Rays continue to have Peralta lean on his changeup more, even to righties, and he had a 31 percent swinging strike rate on the pitch on Tuesday. To righties, he located the pitch far better in the zone, but he focused on chases outside of the zone against lefties. He’ll look to keep it going with a revenge game of sorts against the Mets on Wednesday; although, it’s unclear who would want revenge on whom.

Seymour gave up seven hits, walked none and struck out five. He fell to 9-5 with the loss. Seymour had 33 strikeouts in 23 innings over four starts in August entering play Tuesday. He only struck out five in 5 2/3 innings against the Tigers. Seymour has a 4.21 ERA. He’s lined up to face the Mets at home next week.

Peralta got off to a bit of a rough start in this one. After allowing back-to-back hits to lead off the inning, one of which was an RBI single by Pete Alonso to score Jackson Holliday from second, he then walked Gunnar Henderson to put runners on first and second with no outs. He was fortunate enough to get out of the inning thanks to a double play ball by Samuel Basallo, but in the top of the second inning he would surrender a leadoff homer to Dylan Beavers to cut the Rays’ lead to 3-2. Peralta wouldn’t allow a run over the next two innings, but a sacrifice fly by Jackson Holliday in the fifth inning followed by a two-run homer by Pete Alonso put the O’s back on top 5-3. Peralta wouldn’t allow another run over his last two innings of work, but the Orioles got the best of him after managing just two runs against him when they faced off last week. Peralta’s next start is set for Wednesday on the road against the Tigers.

Kazuma Okamoto, Nathan Lukes and Daz Cameron all took him deep. That brings Seymour’s total of homers allowed to 18 in 101 1/3 innings. The 123/32 K/BB ratio is really nice, but he needs to do a better job of keeping the ball in the park to emerge as an above average starter. He should face the Tigers next week, but with Griffin Jax making his way back, it’s possible that will be his final start for a spell.

Peralta also walked three batters in the contest while recording a pair of strikeouts. He hadn’t allowed a run when he was pulled with two men on and two outs in the fifth inning, only to watch Garrett Cleavinger come on to allow a pair of hits and both of those runners to score. Peralta got 13 whiffs on 76 pitches on the afternoon, registering a CSW of 24 percent. He’ll look to improve upon his disappointing 5.27 ERA and 1.48 WHIP when he squares off against these same Orioles in Baltimore on Friday.

Seymour struck out nine and allowed just four hard-hit balls. Unfortunately, two of those hard-hit balls were homers from Pete Alonso and Christian Encarnacion-Strand. Still, he did notch a third straight quality start. Seymour figures to take his next turn Thursday against the Blue Jays, and he rates as a decent play in mixed leagues, He might be bumped from the Tampa Bay rotation if Griffin Jax returns at the end of the month.

Peralta gave up six hits, walked one and struck out five. It was a solid rebound start after he allowed seven runs to the Rockies at Coors Field in his Rays debut. The Rays haven’t totally fixed Peralta quite yet, but this was certainly a step in the right direction. Peralta is lined up to face the Orioles at home on Sunday.

Seymour struck out seven and walked two while throwing 66 percent of his pitches for strikes and posting a 16 percent swinging strike rate. His changeup is starting to get back to previous levels and registered a 29 percent swinging strike rate and 32 percent CSW in this one. Seymour is scheduled for just one more start, next week against Baltimore, but with Griffin Jax (elbow) heading to the injured list, you’d have to assume that Seymour will remain in the rotation even when Shane McClanahan returns.
