Angels land C prospect Cozart for Adell

Angels acquired minor league C Jacob Cozart from the Cleveland Guardians in exchange for OF Jo Adell.

Cozart was the 38th overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft. He is a tremendous defensive catcher who is hitting .239/.330/.384 in 79 games at Double-A with 10 home runs and 44 RBI. He will be, at worst, a solid backup catcher with his elite glove, but he’s also a left-handed hitter, so he could be a regular MLB starter if he can just be average with the bat.

The Guardians are acquiring Jo Adell from the Angels, the New York Post’s Jon Heyman reports.

Catcher Jacob Cozart is one player going the other way. Given the way the Angels are stocking up on Angels, maybe Martínez is also involved. The Guardians have paid for ignoring their outfield in recent years, and Adell’s right-handed power will add balance to their lineup. He figures to take over in right field, with Chase DeLauter spending more time at DH. Martinez figures to lose at-bats, unless he’s in the deal.

Royals claimed RHP Spencer Bivens off waivers from the Giants.

Bivens, 32, was a solid reliever for the Giants in 2024 and ’25, but he’d given up eight earned runs in five innings this year, resulting in him spending most of the year in Sacramento. Overall, he has a 4.08 ERA in 134 2/3 career innings. No word yet on whether the Royals will add him to their pen or stash him in Triple-A.

George Springer remained in the game and popped out in the eighth after apparently hurting his leg in the sixth inning Saturday against the Orioles.

Springer came up lame on his grounder that ended the sixth, but the left leg issue didn’t force him out of the game. It’s unclear if the leg problem was new or if it’s related to what kept him out of the lineup for three games earlier this week. As things stand now, it seems like he could be day-to-day for the rest of the season.

Smith hit .287/.423/.504 with seven homers in 39 games for Reno after clearing waivers in July. He should finish out the year as an occasional DH and first baseman against right-handers. He’s in the lineup as a DH and batting eighth tonight against the Rangers.

Diamondbacks recalled 1B Tyler Locklear from Triple-A Reno; placed him on the 60-day injured list with a fractured thumb.

That obviously ends his season. It’s hard to understand why the D-backs didn’t give Locklear a real look when he was healthy, instead sending him down last month after he hit .278/.357/.444 in 42 plate appearances while only starting against lefties. He’s slated to be out of options next spring, but he’ll probably qualify for a fourth option if the current rule is left alone in the next CBA.
