Padres jettison swingman JP Sears to Triple-A

Vásquez last pitched Thursday against the Giants, throwing 4 2/3 scoreless innings in relief. JP Sears started that game, but he was in the pen and gave up two runs in an inning in Sunday’s game.

Sears gave up seven hits, including Daniel Susac’s two-run homer in the second. He’s now 3-4 with a 4.26 ERA in six starts and one relief appearance. He could start again Tuesday against the Diamondbacks, but it’s probably not a lock.

Sears gave up three hits, walked none and struck out three. He fell to 2-3 with the loss. Sears allowed an unearned run in the fifth inning when a catcher’s interference allowed Mauricio Dubon to reach base and later score. Sears has a 4.38 ERA. He’s lined up to face the Marlins on the road this weekend.

Sears was gifted a two-run lead in the first inning thanks to a homer by Xander Bogaerts, but in the fifth inning, he turned that lead back over to the Blue Jays. Sears allowed two of the first three batters he faced in the inning to reach base and was relieved by Jhony Brito, who immediately gave up an RBI single to Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who drove in Myles Straw to tie the game at 2-2. In the next at-bat, Brito would allow a three-run homer to Kazuma Okamoto, putting the Blue Jays up 5-2, with two of those four runs charged to Sears. During his brief stint in the Padres’ rotation, Sears has allowed three earned runs or fewer in three of his four starts. For now, we assume he’ll remain in the rotation after the All-Star Break.

Sears gave up six hard-hit balls but just one hit, which was a single from Miguel Rojas in the fifth. He also threw first-pitch strikes to only eight of 17 batters. Still, he was very successful, obviously. The victory makes him 2-1 with a 4.70 ERA in his three starts for the Padres this year. He’ll probably stay in the rotation for now and face the Blue Jays next weekend.

Sears surrendered eight hits, and three of those left the ballpark in a start that didn’t come close to matching his season debut against Atlanta this past Wednesday. The 30-year-old clearly had command issues, as he also walked three batters and threw 52-of-95 pitches for strikes before exiting. Sears will try and bounce back in his next scheduled start, but that’s likely to come Sunday against the Dodgers. Probably not a good idea to bet on a rebound for that one.

Committing $2.75 million to retain Sears as rotation insurance paid off tonight, as the 30-year-old lefty kept the Braves scoreless into the sixth. It seems likely that Sears will now return to Triple-A, as Germán Márquez should be ready to come off the IL, but he could prove important in the second half if injuries continue to strike.

Sears provides San Diego with some additional length out of the bullpen with starter Lucas Giolito heading to the injured list with an elbow issue. The 30-year-old lefty has yet to pitch in the majors this season after posting a lackluster 5.04 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 117/36 K/BB ratio across 135 2/3 innings between the Athletics and Padres last year.

Miranda hit .304/.373/.522 this spring, but his fate was sealed when the Padres committed to Ty France as a bench guy. Sears probably would have had a rotation spot with a strong spring, but he turned in an 8.44 ERA in his three starts. If the Padres had it to do over again, they probably would have non-tendered him in November instead of retaining him for $2.75 million.

Sears was awful in his first spring start — not that it counts/matters — but it was still nice to see a bounceback. The one blemish was a homer from Luke Raley. Sears is trying to earn one of the final rotation spots in the San Diego rotation, and outings like this won’t hurt a bit.
