Angels claimed RHP Ryan Watson off waivers from the Red Sox.

Watson, a Rule 5 Draft selection this year, has a 4.53 ERA in 55 2/3 innings with the Red Sox this year. He’ll provide depth to the Angels pen.

Watson is essentially the odd-man out in a roster crunch after the Red Sox picked up reliever Erik Miller from the Giants at the trade deadline. The 28-year-old has delivered a respectable 4.53 ERA across 55 2/3 innings in his first shot at the highest level. There should be some interest on waivers.

The 27-year-old left-hander came over from the Pirates in a trade this offseason along with Johan Oviedo. Samaniego had a good spring, throwing 5 1/3 shutout innings while allowing just one hit and striking out six. However, he has minor league options left, and the Red Sox have three other left-handed relievers in their bullpen, so they opted to send Samaniego to the minors and kept Ryan Watson on the team. Watson is a Rule 5 pick, so he would have needed to be sent back to the Athletics if he didn’t make the Opening Day roster.
  • BOS Relief Pitcher
Watson was drafted in the Rule 5 draft by the A’s, but his chance to make his MLB mark will come with Boston. The 28-year-old will need to pitch well this spring to have any shot of making the Opening Day roster.
  • ATH Relief Pitcher
He’ll be traded to the Red Sox for infielder Justin Riemer, according to MassLive.com’s Chris Cotillo. The 28-year-old Watson has been a steady minor league reliever for several years, but it wasn’t enough to get him a chance with the Orioles or with the Giants, who acquired him in Aug. 2024. He had a 4.26 ERA and a 64/16 K/BB in 50 2/3 innings for the Giants’ Triple-A club last season.
  • SF Relief Pitcher
The 26-year-old hurler has done a nice job in his limited minor league action this season, registering a 2.38 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and a 23/7 K/BB ratio over 22 2/3 innings between Double-A Bowie and Triple-A Norfolk. He’ll add bullpen depth for the Giants.

Adley Rutschman (wrist) is expected to be activated for Tuesday’s game against the Blue Jays, according to Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy.

Rutschman will make his highly-anticipated Red Sox debut up in Toronto after being acquired from the division-rival Orioles in a six-player blockbuster at the trade deadline last week. The 28-year-old switch-hitting backstop has been on the shelf with wrist inflammation since July 20. He went 1-for-5 with a double and two RBI in a pair of rehab contests for Triple-A Worcester last week.

Diamondbacks activated RHP Michael Soroka from the 15-day injured list.

Soroka gets the ball for Monday’s series opener against the Rockies at Chase Field following a seven-week absence due to a left glute strain. Needless to say, it’s an extremely favorable matchup right away. The 29-year-old was in the midst of arguably his best season since his 2019 breakout with Atlanta, compiling a sparkling 3.07 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 79/17 K/BB ratio across 82 innings before hitting the shelf in mid-June. He should be rostered in all fantasy formats.

Diamondbacks signed RHP Zack Littell to a one-year contract.

It didn’t take Littell very long to find a new opportunity after being jettisoned by the Nationals last week. The 30-year-old figures to operate in a versatile swingman role with the Diamondbacks after forging an underwhelming 4.97 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 70/35 K/BB ratio across 112 1/3 innings for Washington earlier this year. He’s unlikely to offer any semblance of fantasy value over the final two months, but he should gobble up plenty of innings for Arizona.

Strowd heads back to the minors without making an appearance after being called up last Friday. He made one relief appearance for Arizona back in June.

Brewers RHP Bryse Wilson elected free agency.

Wilson has opted to test the open market instead of accepting an outright assignment to Triple-A Nashville after clearing waivers. The 28-year-old gave up four runs over 13 2/3 innings after signing with the Brewers last month. He’s pitched for three different clubs this season.

Athletics activated INF/OF Zack Gelof from the 10-day injured list.

Gelof was putting together an extremely encouraging stretch before hitting the injured list with a right knee laceration back on July 10. He’s back after missing just over one month of action. The 26-year-old offers enough power and speed to be interesting for fantasy purposes when he’s in a groove at the dish, especially since he’s making much more contact of late. He’s hit .273/.327/.476 with 11 homers and eight steals in 247 plate appearances this season. There’s definitely some fantasy appeal in deeper mixed leagues down the home stretch.

Athletics designated INF Jonathan Ornelas for assignment.

Ornelas loses his roster spot with the Athletics after hitting .167 (2-for-12) during a six-game stint with the club. The 26-year-old infielder figures to pass through waivers unclaimed and head to free agency.

Cole Carrigg is at shortstop and hitting second on Monday against the Diamondbacks.

Carrigg has batted third or higher in eight of nine games since the start of August, including seven straight since the trade deadline. The 24-year-old rookie possesses an exciting blend of fantasy-relevant skills and has gotten off to a phenomenal start in the majors, slashing .297/.385/.503 with five homers, 30 RBI and six steals in 196 plate appearances through 50 games. He’s going to be an extremely popular pick in fantasy drafts next spring.

Royals signed RHP Craig Kimbrel to a one-year contract.

The deal is now official. Kimbrel joins Kansas City’s bullpen prior to Monday’s series opener against the Dodgers after posting a pedestrian 4.81 ERA across 33 2/3 innings of work between the Rays and Mets earlier this season. The 38-year-old former elite closer has totaled 440 saves dating back to 2010, which is the fifth-most in baseball history. He’ll add another chapter to his late-career journeyman odyssey with the Royals.

McGee loses his spot in Kansas City’s relief mix with veteran Craig Kimbrel coming aboard. The 28-year-old allowed seven runs over 5 1/3 innings for the Royals after being called up back on July 28.
