Carlos Rodón will make one more rehab start

The lone run came on Coby Mayo’s homer in the third. In the second, Rodón, returning from elbow inflammation, allowed two to reach with one out before getting a likely double play ball, only for Jazz Chisholm Jr. to record no outs on the play. Rodón, though, bounced back to strike out Carlos Narváez and Jackson Holliday, with the final pitch to Holliday barely catching the corner high and outside to get overturned for a strike. Rodón threw 68 pitches tonight, which is about what was expected coming in. He should get up to 80 or so Sunday against the Blue Jays.

Rodón returns from the injured list to take the ball against the Orioles. The 33-year-old last appeared in a big league game since June 28. His activation couldn’t have come at a better time as Max Fried was just placed back on the injured list with a bone bruise in his left elbow.

Rodón returns to New York’s rotation for the first time since hitting the injured list with elbow inflammation back on July 3. The 33-year-old veteran southpaw recorded seven punchouts over 4 1/3 shutout frames for Double-A Somerset in his final rehab tune-up last week. He shouldn’t have any significant workload restrictions in his return from the injured list and should be rostered in all fantasy formats. His return bumps Will Warren back an additional day and figures to push hard-throwing southpaw Ryan Weathers into a relief role.

It’s expected to be Rodón’s final tune-up before returning to New York’s rotation. The 33-year-old veteran’s velocity was down slightly while allowing three runs over 2 2/3 innings for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre last weekend. Fantasy managers should keep a close eye on this final rehab outing before slotting him back into their rotations.

Rodón’s velocity was down two mph on his fastball and three mph on his slider today, so that’s something to watch. He’ll definitely make at least one more rehab start before returning from elbow inflammation.

Rodón has been out for two weeks with elbow inflammation, so it’s certainly good news that he has already begun to throw. However, there are many steps to go before he’s back on the mound with the Yankees. We saw Mick Abel land on the injured list with a similar injury earlier this season, and he was even able to make multiple rehab starts before the injury cropped up again and required surgery. We’re hopeful Rodón can avoid that same fate, but the Yankees will be cautious with their left-hander, who also had surgery this offseason to remove bone spurs from his elbow.

Not great. We’d seen no sign of Rodón being hurt in his last start, so hopefully this is something that just needs to be managed rather than something that could lead to surgery. More updates to come, assuredly. Rodón had a 3.30 ERA in nine starts so far this year, striking out 52 and allowing just 32 hits in 46 1/3 innings pitched.
