Athletics recall Hayden Juenger from Las Vegas

Juenger earns a trip back to the minors after giving up four runs during his lone inning of work against the Red Sox on Friday at Fenway Park. The 25-year-old righty has allowed nine runs over 11 1/3 innings in the big leagues this season.

Juenger receives his first opportunity with the Athletics after being acquired from the Blue Jays in a small trade last month. The 25-year-old made a pair of relief appearances for Toronto earlier this year. He’s likely to operate in low-leverage spots.

Juenger was DFA’d by the Jays earlier this week. In his MLB debut, the 25-year-old gave up three earned runs over two innings in two appearances for the Jays earlier this season. Primarily a reliever the last four years, he has a 4.71 ERA and a 251/113 K/BB in 237 career innings in Triple-A. The A’s figure to stick him in their Triple-A bullpen for now.

Juenger is off the 40-man roster, and it clears room for Shane Bieber (elbow) to be activated off the 60-day injured list for his season debut Tuesday against the Astros. Juenger could see interest on the waiver wire, but if he goes unclaimed or untraded, he’ll likely report back to Triple-A Buffalo.

He allowed three earned runs in two innings with the Jays in his first MLB action, walking two and striking out none. He’ll likely be back at some point on the Buffalo/Toronto shuttle when the Jays need a fresh arm.

Juenger earns his first promotion to the majors after posting a serviceable 3.15 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 23/8 K/BB ratio across 20 innings for Triple-A Buffalo this season. He also has three saves during that span. The 25-year-old joins Toronto’s bullpen ahead of Saturday’s contest against the division-rival Orioles and figures to operate in low-leverage spots initially.

Tiedemann — universally considered among the top pitching prospects in the game — should get a legitimate shot at cracking the Jays’ Opening Day rotation. Injuries limited him to just 44 innings over 15 minor league starts in 2023 before he concluded his season by taking home Pitcher of the Year honors in the Arizona Fall League.
