Zach Neto is absent from the Angels’ starting lineup for Thursday’s divisional showdown against the Rangers.

There aren’t any rumblings of the dynamic shortstop dealing with any sort of injury, so it’s just a night of rest for Neto. Denzer Guzman will start in his place at shortstop and will bat sixth against Rangers’ star right-hander Jacob deGrom.

Cubs’ manager Craig Counsell told reporters on Sunday that David Peterson will be moved to the bullpen with Edward Cabrera rejoining the rotation on Sunday.

Peterson hasn’t pitched poorly since joining the Cubs, but he’ll get squeezed back into a long relief role for the time being now that Cabrera is ready to return. That should strip away any lingering mixed league fantasy value that he may have had.

Athletics transferred RHP Justin Sterner to the 60-day injured list.

This move doesn’t come as a surprise as Sterner underwent season-ending knee surgery last week. It was done as a procedural move to free up a spot on the team’s 40-man roster for the addition of Joe Rock on Sunday.

Athletics claimed LHP Joe Rock off of waivers from the White Sox; optioned him to Triple-A Las Vegas.

The 26-year-old left-hander was designated for assignment on Friday after posting a 3.48 ERA, 2.13 WHIP and a 12/11 K/BB ratio across 10 1/3 innings in four appearances with the White Sox. He’ll function as extra rotation depth for the A’s at the Triple-A level.

Brice Turang (knee) was held out of the Brewers’ starting lineup for a fourth consecutive game on Sunday.

The dynamic 26-year-old second baseman winds up missing the entire weekend series against the Dodgers due to pain in his right knee. He’s expected to be available off the bench on Sunday, and the Brewers are still hopeful that he’ll be able to avoid a trip to the injured list.

Cubs optioned RHP Javier Assad to Triple-A Iowa.

With Edward Cabrera returning from the injured list to join the Cubs’ rotation on Sunday, Assad once again gets squeezed off of the active roster. The 29-year-old hurler has compiled a solid 3.59 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and a 53/21 K/BB ratio over 80 1/3 innings in 21 appearances (10 starts) with the Cubs this season. He’ll almost assuredly get another opportunity with the Cubs before season’s end.

Cubs activated RHP Edward Cabrera from the 15-day injured list.

The 28-year-old hurler will rejoin the Cubs’ rotation on Sunday afternoon against the Cardinals. Cabrera holds a 5.10 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and a 65/29 K/BB ratio across 72 1/3 innings in 14 starts with the Cubs this season.

Corey Seager is not in the Rangers’ starting lineup for Sunday’s divisional matchup against the Athletics.

The Rangers are being sure to mix in plenty of days off for the 32-year-old slugger and it makes sense to do so with left-hander Jacob Lopez toeing the slab for the A’s on Sunday afternoon. Expect Seager to make an appearance off the bench in this one if the right situation arises. Ezequiel Duran will start at shortstop in his place and bat second for the Rangers.

Michael Busch is absent from the Cubs’ starting lineup for Sunday’s soiree against the Cardinals.

Busch had been mired in a bit of a power outage lately, slashing just .253/.290/.316 with one homer, nine RBI and an 18/4 K/BB ratio over 100 plate appearances in his last 22 ballgames. He’ll get a day off to reset in this one with Pedro Ramirez filling in at first base and batting sixth against Cardinals’ right-hander Hunter Dobbins.

Nationals’ manager Blake Butera told reporters on Sunday that star outfielder James Wood (oblique) has been slow to progress in his recovery.

Butera didn’t term it as a setback necessarily, but he still isn’t ready to progress to more strenuous baseball activities. At this rate, it would be surprising to see him back it back before the end of August.
