Steven Matz pitched a scoreless inning while striking out one in Friday’s loss to the Orioles.
Matz retired the side in order in the first frame in what proved to be his only inning of work. He struck out Pete Alonso to begin the game and needed 14 pitches to retire Jackson Holliday and Coby Mayo to finish things off. Matz hasn’t allowed a baserunner in his last five innings of work. He’s made just two starts since June and will likely revert back to the bullpen.
