Griffin Conine swipes two bases in comeback win

A rare lower-stress victory for the Dodgers, who had just gone 1-4 while playing five one-run games in a row. Glasnow had a bad first inning in his return from the IL last Tuesday against the Braves, but he’s been excellent in 11 innings since. Both hits he gave up today were singles, and he finished up with a 34 percent CSW while striking out six. He’ll take on the Nationals next time out.

This was shaping up as one of Valdez’s better outings until Teoscar Hernández hit a two-run homer with one out in the sixth. Valdez struck out five and averaged a season-high 95.1 mph with his sinker. He was averaging 93.8 mph coming into the game, and this marks his first time averaging 95 mph in 13 months. Maybe it’ll prove to be an aberration, but if not, a better September could be on the way for Valdez. He’ll face the Guardians next weekend.

Hernández’s homer off Framber Valdez broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth. It was his first since Aug. 3. He went 14-for-73 (.192) with three RBI and a 28/4 K/BB in his 22 games in between homers.

Another nice game means more overtaking Hall of Famers on all-time lists for Freeman. His 579th double broke a tie with Wade Boggs, putting him in 24th place there. He overtook Ernie Banks and moved into a tie with Reggie Jackson for 89th on the hits list at 2,586, and he’s now in 64th place in times on base at 3,830, one more than David Ortiz.

McKinstry would ideally be a bench guy at this point, but because of Detroit’s injuries, he seems set to top 100 games started on the season (today was his 90th). He’s hitting just .213/.297/.314 in 373 plate appearances so far, and he’s even been caught on five of his seven steal attempts. Last year, he was caught five times on 24 attempts.

Expectations are that Marte, currently on the 10-day IL with a knee injury following his stint on the restricted list, will play during the series, though if the D-backs hold off activating him until Tuesday, they wouldn’t have to send down someone to make room for him. But, then, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. is close to returning, too, so someone (Jose Fernandez?) is getting sent down pretty soon.

Warren struck out seven and walked one in the 98-pitch outing. He pitched into the eighth but was removed after a couple of Boston hitters reached base. The Yankees took three of four against the Sox this weekend with the win, and they claimed the season series. That affects home field in the Wild Card round if the two rivals finish with identical records. Warren lowered his ERA to 4.23. He was nearly squeezed out of the rotation in recent weeks, and he still figures to pitch out of the bullpen come October. But he certainly showed his value as a starter. He’ll visit the Padres at Petco Park in his next scheduled appearance.

Suarez allowed two walks and only struck out two. He had made it through four scoreless before things unraveled in the fifth, though there was a questionable umpiring decision involving Ceddanne Rafaela on a ball he appeared to catch. Rafaela was ruled to have “trapped” the ball even after review. That led to a two-run hit from Paul Goldschmidt, followed by a Heliot Ramos three-run homer. The Yankees took the season series with the victory. That could affect home-field advantage in the Wild Card Series if the two rivals finish with identical records. Suarez is scheduled to face the Orioles on the road next time out.

Ramos’ playing time against right-handers has been squeezed since Cody Bellinger returned from the injured list, but he hit third or fourth in all three games against a lefty in this weekend’s series with Boston. The former Giant has struggled with his new team, but he hit his first homer as a Yankee in a five-run fifth inning on Sunday. There was a controversial call on a ball that Ceddanne Rafaela appeared to catch, but the center fielder was ruled to have “trapped” it instead. A two-RBI hit from Paul Goldschmidt followed, before Ramos connected for a three-run homer off Ranger Suarez.

Goldschmidt broke a scoreless tie by driving in two in the fifth inning. He then came around to score on Heliot Ramos’ three-run homer. Later in the game, the veteran first baseman connected for a solo shot, his 18th of the year. Goldschmidt has started just six times in August, all against lefties. He’s hit first or second in those games, however, making him a strong DFS option whenever the Yankees face a southpaw.
