The Phillies have Alec Bohm sitting and Kyle Schwarber playing first base against the Astros on Wednesday.

Bryce Harper gets a partial day off as a DH. Bohm is absent despite going 6-for-21 with a homer, four doubles and four RBI in six games this month.

Sosa was removed from Wednesday’s game due to a groin injury that he aggravated while hustling out an infield single. He’ll start at third base and bat seventh for the Phillies on Thursday evening. Bryan De La Cruz will start in left field in place of Brandon Marsh. Here’s the full lineup that the Phillies will use against Braves’ opener Ray Kerr to start Thursday’s game: Trea Turner (SS), Kyle Schwarber (DH), Bryce Harper (RF), Alec Bohm (1B), Bryson Stott (2B), Bryan De La Cruz (LF), Edmundo Sosa (3B), J.T. Realmuto (C) and Justin Crawford (CF).

The Braves grabbed a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the seventh after defensive miscues from Bohm on a sac bunt and Harper on a fly to right, but the Phillies came right back in the eighth, with Schwarber and Harper taking Dylan Lee deep after Lee went the entire regular season without ever allowing a homer to a lefty. Andrew Painter kept things tied afterwards, and Bohm hit a rare opposite field homer off Didier Fuentes in the 10th to give the Phillies the lead. Bohm’s homer was his third in 40 career postseason games. Including the regular season, it’s his ever extra-inning homer. Game 3 will take place Thursday. The Braves are expected to throw Grant Holmes as a starter or bulk guy, with the Phillies likely starting Aaron Nola and perhaps going to Zack Wheeler later.

This is not a major surprise after Arraez sprained his ankle just this week. Phillies manager Don Mattingly said, “We still get improvement every day, but not enough. He was going to try to hit today and just wasn’t able to do it. So, we kind of crossed that bridge today.” There’s a chance that Arraez will be able to return for the NLDS, but, for now, Triple-A Lehigh Valley utility player Otto Kemp will take Arraez’s place on the roster. The Phillies figure to move Bryson Stott back to second base, but it remains to be seen if they move Alec Bohm back to third and Bryce Harper to first or if they just insert Edmundo Sosa into the lineup at third base.

Bohm put the Phillies on the board with a base hit in the fourth inning to drive in a run. He then collected his second RBI with another base hit in the fifth before drawing a walk to reach for a third time in the seventh. The 30-year-old third baseman is hitting .251/.317/.390 with 15 homers and 86 RBI across 600 plate appearances.

The Nationals literally could not get Bohm out here. The three walks he drew were three of 13 total by Washington pitchers in this game and the first time Bohm walked thrice since June of the 2021 season. He had a catastrophic first half of the season, but has been red-hot since the All-Star break with a .314/.383/.461 slash line as the Phillies push towards the postseason.

Bohm had a huge Friday. First, on the field where his double and home run brought home the only two runs his Phillies would score against Chris Sale and the Braves’ bullpen here. Also, off the field where he finally settled his lawsuit against his parents for mismanaging his finances and misrepresented their stakes in LLCs run on his behalf. Clearly an unfortunate and heavy situation, it makes sense that it would’ve weighed on him as he struggled for the first few months of the season. However, he has a .318 batting average and .847 OPS in the second half as he’s gotten himself back on track.

The Phillies have their full lineup ready to roll as they attempt to win their 10th consecutive game in this one. Bohm is back at first base and hitting fifth after sitting out Sunday’s game against the Cardinals with a hamstring issue. It doesn’t appear to be a significant concern at the moment.
  • PHI 3rd Baseman #28
Bohm made an early exit from Saturday’s game due to cramping in his hamstring/groin area, so the Phillies will give him an extra day off to make sure that it doesn’t develop into a long-term issue. Kyle Schwarber will make a rare start at first base in his place while Bryce Harper functions as the team’s designated hitter and Bryan De La Cruz gets a start in right field.
  • PHI 3rd Baseman #28
Bohm left the rout of the Cardinals early, but it’s something he’s been playing through without it bothering him at the plate. We’ll call him probable for Sunday.
  • PHI 3rd Baseman #28
Bohm came up with the Phillies down one, runners on the corners and none out in the 10th and delivered a 386-foot barrel to center. A quality center fielder would have caught it, which still would have resulted in a game-tying sac fly, but José Fermín, who was playing his third position of the night after Everson Pereira was lifted, came up a little short of making a sliding catch. All three of Bohm’s hits tonight left the bat at 103-105 mph. He’s 17-for-37 with seven extra-base hits and 11 RBI in his last nine games.

Rob Zastryzny has elected free agency.

The 34-year-old southpaw was sent outright to Triple-A Nashville by the Brewers near the end of September. Rather than waiting it out to see if he could be an option to work out of their bullpen at some point during the remainder of the postseason, Zastryzny will head to the free agent market. He made just 11 appearances at the Triple-A level this season, registering a stellar 1.93 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and a 9/2 K/BB ratio over 9 1/3 innings.

Ian Hamilton has elected free agency.

The 31-year-old hurler made just four appearances with the Braves during the 2026 campaign, registering a 7.71 ERA, 1.93 WHIP and a 4/3 K/BB ratio over 4 2/3 innings. He’ll get a head start on free agency.

Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Globe reports that imaging on the injured leg of right-hander Garrett Whitlock revealed that he had been pitching through a fractured tibia that wasn’t properly diagnosed.

Given the severity of the injury, it’s awfully impressive that Whitlock was able to continue pitching — and pitch as well as he was — down the stretch and into the postseason for the Red Sox. The 30-year-old hurler isn’t expected to require surgery, but he will be in a walking boot for the next 4-6 weeks while the injury heals. Whitlock should still be able to go through his regular off-season routine and should be a full participant at the start of spring training.

Dodgers’ manager Dave Roberts told reporters on Friday that while Miguel Rojas (back) has improved, his status for the NLCS remains in question.

Rojas exited Game 3 of the NLDS due to pain in his lower back and sat out Game 4 on Wednesday. While he has progressed steadily during their time off, he’s still not ready to return and could potentially be left off of the Dodgers’ roster for their NLCS battle against the Brewers. Expect the Dodgers to make a final decision on his status on Sunday.

Dodgers’ manager Dave Roberts confirmed Friday that Tarik Skubal will start Game 1 of the NLCS against the Brewers on Sunday.

That was the expectation all along, but it has now been confirmed. Right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto will start in Game 2 with Blake Snell expected to start in Game 3. Skubal delivered a dominant performance in his Dodgers’ postseason debut, striking out seven batters over six innings of one-run ball in a victory over the Braves in Game 1 of the NLDS.

Guardians’ manager Stephen Vogt announced Friday that Gavin Williams will start in Game 5 of the ALDS against the White Sox on Saturday evening.

The Guardians’ ace came out of the bullpen in Game 4 on Thursday, throwing 18 pitches to record the final three outs. Williams racked up 11 strikeouts over five innings of two-run baseball as the Guardians dropped Game 2 on Monday. It’ll be an all hands on deck situation in an elimination game for the Guardians, with Williams giving them everything that he possibly can before turning the ball over to the bullpen on Saturday.

According to Alex Speier of the Boston Globe, Sonny Gray plans to continue pitching in 2027.

There had been some rumblings that the 37-year-old hurler was mulling retirement but ultimately, it became a relatively easy decision. Gray noted, “My family and I have talked about it and it’s an easy decision... I still want to win a World Series, whether that is [with] Boston or with whoever wants me.” He’s expected to decline his side of his $30 million mutual option with the Red Sox and should be very highly sought after in free agency this winter.

The Rangers announced Friday that Josh Jung will not require surgery to repair his fractured right hand.

Jung suffered a right-hand fracture during the final week of September when he was drilled by a 95-mph fastball from Joe Ryan. He’ll still need some time to recover, but it’s not expected to interfere with his regular off-season routine. Expect the 28-year-old infielder to be fully recovered and ready to go for the start of spring training.

Danny Jansen underwent successful surgery on October 7 to remove a bone growth in his right hand.

The procedure isn’t expected to interfere with Jansen’s regular offseason routine, and the 31-year-old backstop should be ready to go for the start of spring training. Jansen slashed just .203/.296/.381 with eight homers and 26 RBI in 227 plate appearances with the Rangers during the 2026 campaign.

Corey Seager underwent successful surgery on October 6 to remove a bone spur from his right elbow.

The 32-year-old shortstop will have plenty of time to recover from the procedure and still be ready for the start of spring training. While the elbow injury didn’t force him to miss any time in 2026, it may have played a role in his underwhelming .227/.312/.424 slash line.
