Luis Arraez (ankle) will not be on the Phillies’ Wild Card Series roster.

This is not a major surprise after Arraez sprained his ankle just this week. Phillies manager Don Mattingly said, “We still get improvement every day, but not enough. He was going to try to hit today and just wasn’t able to do it. So, we kind of crossed that bridge today.” There’s a chance that Arraez will be able to return for the NLDS, but, for now, Triple-A Lehigh Valley utility player Otto Kemp will take Arraez’s place on the roster. The Phillies figure to move Bryson Stott back to second base, but it remains to be seen if they move Alec Bohm back to third and Bryce Harper to first or if they just insert Edmundo Sosa into the lineup at third base.

Luis Arraez (ankle) is not in the Phillies’ starting lineup for Sunday’s series finale against the Rays.

It’s the third straight game that Arraez has missed since suffering a left ankle sprain earlier in the week. It’s possible that he could be available off the bench if needed in a near must-win game for the Phillies on Sunday. Bryson Stott will again slide over and cover second base while Edmundo Sosa starts at third base and will bat seventh for the Phillies.

Arraez will sit out his second straight contest after suffering a left ankle sprain earlier this week. It’ll be Bryson Stott taking over once against the keystone in his absence. The contact-oriented 29-year-old’s status for next week’s potential NL Wild Card Series matchup appears to be in serious jeopardy. Of course, the Phillies need to hold off the Diamondbacks this weekend if they’re going to punch their ticket to the postseason.

Bryson Stott went 1-for-3 with a walk on Friday against the Rays.

The Phillies have spent weeks searching for a big hit and Stott failed to deliver it in this game. After reaching in each of his first two plate appearances, Stott came up with runners on first and second with one out in the sixth as the Phillies trailed 2-0. He wound up hitting a liner right to second base and that score held through the final. The Phillies’ magic number remains at two as things get even tighter between them and the Padres.

Luis Arraez (ankle) was held out of the Phillies’ starting lineup for Friday night’s battle against the Rays.

The Phillies haven’t provided any updates on his status yet, but the fact that he hasn’t been placed on the injured list leaves hope that they expect him to return for the NLDS, even if he misses the final weekend of the regular season. His availability will ultimately depend on how much he’s able to improve over the next few days.

Phillies’ skipper Don Mattingly told reporters after Thursday’s game that X-rays on the injured left ankle of Luis Arraez came back negative for any fractures.

That’s certainly encouraging. He’ll be reevaluated on Friday to determine his availability for the weekend and the postseason. All fantasy managers and Phillies’ fans can do now is wait and hope for the best. Expect another update on his status on Friday afternoon.

Luis Arraez was removed from Thursday’s battle against the Brewers due to a left ankle sprain.

Arrez was trying to avoid a collision with Jake Bauers while running to first base when he stepped awkwardly and went down in a heap. He had to be helped off the field and was unable to put any weight on his left leg. He’ll head for further evaluation. There’s definitely concern that he won’t be ready for the Wild Card series and could be looking at an extended absence.

Luis Arraez went 0-for-4 as the Phillies’ cleanup hitter Wednesday against the Brewers.

Arraez hasn’t given the Phillies much of a lift with his .283/.314/.376 line in 45 games with the team, but what really matters is how he performs in October. He’s also still currently in line to win the NL batting title, though he dropped to .312 tonight. He hadn’t finished a game that low since May 14. Gabriel Moreno (.307) and Otto Lopez (.304) have the best chance of catching him.

PHI 3rd Baseman #28

Alec Bohm went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a walk against the Mets on Saturday.

Bohm put the Phillies on the board with a base hit in the fourth inning to drive in a run. He then collected his second RBI with another base hit in the fifth before drawing a walk to reach for a third time in the seventh. The 30-year-old third baseman is hitting .251/.317/.390 with 15 homers and 86 RBI across 600 plate appearances.
Edmundo Sosa

PHI Left Fielder #33

Edmundo Sosa went 3-for-3 with a double, a homer, and an RBI in Friday’s loss to the Mets.

Sosa was responsible for three of the six hits the Phillies tallied as a team on Friday, with his biggest coming on a solo blast in the sixth inning off of Mets starter Zac Thornton. It was the eighth homer of the season for Sosa, who has hit safely in four of his last six games.

Brandon Marsh is absent from the Phillies’ starting lineup for Friday night’s skirmish against the Mets.

Marsh will take a seat with left-hander Zac Thornton toeing the slab for the Mets. It’s the third time in the last seven games that the 28-year-old outfielder has found himself left out of the Phillies’ starting nine. That may have something to do with the fact that he’s slashing an anemic .182/.240/.242 with just two homers and 12 RBI in 181 plate appearances since the All-Star break. Edmundo Sosa will start in his place in left field and bat sixth for the Phillies on Friday night.

Aaron Judge took four at-bats in live batting practice Monday, going 0-for-2 with two walks.

He struck out against Ryan Weathers. Judge didn’t do any running during the live BP or afterwards. It seems like it would be quite the roll of the dice to put him on the Wild Card roster 13 days after he suffered a calf strain.

Hagen Smith will start the White Sox’s bullpen game against the Astros in Game 1 of the Wild Card.

Smith started one of his 18 appearances after joining the White Sox in August, pitching two scoreless innings against the Pirates. He topped out at three innings in relief against the Twins on Sept. 6 and had a 1.29 ERA in 28 innings overall.

With Kevin Gausman’s status a little bit up in the air, Boyd seemed like the one certainty to get a start for the Cubs in the Wild Card. He’ll be pitching on four days’ rest after limiting the Marlins to one run over seven innings last time out. He also pitched Game 1 of last year’s Wild Card against the Padres, allowing one run over 4 1/3 innings in what turned into a 3-1 win for the Cubs.

Seager was limited to 102 games this year, but the elbow never kept him out. Still, it might have had something to do with his career worst .227/.312/.424 line. Seager could have surgery and still be ready in plenty of time for spring training.

Sources told The Athletic’s Chandler Rome that AJ Blubaugh will start Game 1 of the Wild Card series against the White Sox on Tuesday.

There was little doubt Blubaugh would pitch tomorrow, but it’s a little surprising to see him get the ball first, just because that never happened all year. He led the majors with 96 relief innings, finishing with a 3.66 ERA in his 64 appearances. He’s been used in shorter stints lately than he was early on, so the Astros would be pushing it if they asked for more than two innings from him. The only two times he completed three innings both took place in May.

Cardinals claimed RHP Chase Hampton off waivers from the Nationals.

Hampton was previously claimed off waivers from the Yankees a couple of weeks ago. He was regarded as one of that team’s top prospects before undergoing Tommy John surgery in Feb. 2025. He returned to the mound in May, but he struggled mightily in posting an 8.18 ERA in 55 innings, which is why he’s bouncing around like this.

The versatile Wade, 31, debuted in 2017 and spent parts of nine years in the majors with the Yankees, Angels, A’s and Padres, hitting .216/.294/.284 with seven homers and 51 steals in 992 plate appearances. He was with the Rangers this spring, but he failed to make the team, and he never signed with another club after being released in mid-April.
