Kumar Rocker allowed one run in four innings and got a no-decision in the Rangers’ 6-2 victory over the Diamondbacks on Saturday.

Rocker gave up two hits, walked two and struck out five. He pitched fairly well, but was pulled after four innings and 65 pitches. Rocker has a 4.54 ERA. He’s lined up to face the Blue Jays at home next week, but he doesn’t need to be rostered in most fantasy leagues.
Should athletes time their family planning better?
After Mason Miller was unavailable for a crucial Padres NLDS game due to the birth of his child, Nick Wright and Dan Le Batard tap into an age-old debate: Should athletes be more careful about when they have children?

Rocker managed to keep Toronto’s offense in check until Myles Straw put a ball in the left-center field gap for an RBI double in the fifth inning. Fortunately, reliever Tyler Alexander was able to come on an prevent any further damage. He finished with two strikeouts and also handed out a pair of free passes. The 26-year-old former top prospect holds a pedestrian 4.47 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 134/59 K/BB ratio across 143 innings this season. He’ll presumably get the ball to close out the regular season against the Mets on Thursday. That could change depending on what the Rangers need to do to secure a playoff spot.

Working behind a pair of openers, Rocker struggled mightily here. Jonathan Aranda hit a mammoth 412 foot home run on the fifth pitch he threw and the Rays wound up putting six runs on the board over the first three innings he worked. He didn’t command his sinker well and it got lit up for four hits on four hard-hit balls and he scrapped it after his first time around Tampa’s lineup. Overall, things have not gone well for Rocker in a while and he has a 6.75 ERA over seven starts since August first. He’s scheduled to face the Mariners in Seattle next time out.

86 pitches to get nine outs. Rocker struck out seven of the 17 batters he faced today, but four walked and the six who put the ball in play against him collected four singles. Rocker finishes August with a 6.00 ERA, 31 strikeouts and 17 walks in 27 innings over six starts. It’d seem to be time to try him in relief if either Nathan Eovaldi or Jack Leiter were ready to return, but since they’re clearly not, Rocker should face the Rays next weekend.

Rocker should have given up a two-run homer to Andrew Benintendi in the first, but Brandon Nimmo made a terrific catch in right to bring it back. Rocker did give up a two-run homer to Tristan Peters the following inning, but he locked in after that in winning for the first time in five starts this month. It’s the second time this year that he’s struck out eight, and he’s now 5-10 with a 4.41 ERA overall. Rocker figures to make his next start Sunday in Milwaukee.
  • TEX Starting Pitcher #80
Rocker pitched well overall here despite nibbling far too much early on. He threw 80 pitches through four innings and had to work hard for every out because he was reluctant to throw it in the zone with a barely 40% zone rate and only 11 first-pitch strikes out of the 22 batters he faced. Still, his slider was nasty forcing six whiffs and helped him out of a few jams. On the season, he has a 4.46 ERA, 109 strikeouts, and 48 walks through 121 innings. He’s scheduled for a two-start week coming up against both the Brewers and White Sox on the road.

Rocker was better than usual about avoiding hard contact tonight, allowing him to survive while walking five. Still, there’s no real excuse to be walking five against this A’s lineup in the first place. The no-decision keeps Rocker 4-9 with a 4.50 ERA and a 106/47 K/BB in 116 innings. He’ll face the Nationals next week.

It was his shortest outing since May 2. Rocker gave up two runs in the first inning, a result of him failing to cover first base after Jake Burger made a diving play. It would get worse in the second inning, as he served up homers to Colton Cowser and Pete Alonso. Rocker was pulled after issuing a leadoff walk in the fourth inning. The loss dropped him to 4-9 on the year while his ERA shot back up to 4.46. That’s the highest it’s been since mid-May. Rocker will try to get back on track against the injury-riddled A’s in his next start, but it’s a tough assignment in Sacramento.
  • TEX Starting Pitcher #80
Rocker had pretty awful luck today, and he did well to limit the damage to three runs. He actually allowed just four hard-hit balls, and the big blow, Jeremy Peña’s two-run homer to left in the fourth, would have been a double or maybe even a single in the majority of ballparks. Rocker struck out five and walked two. He’ll face the Orioles next weekend. He remains a mediocre option in mixed leagues.
  • TEX Starting Pitcher #80
Rocker leaned on his slider today, recording all seven of his strikeouts with the pitch. He got 12 whiffs on 22 swings at that offering and just two on 24 swings when he threw anything else. He’s won back-to-back starts to move to 4-8 with a 4.03 ERA on the season. That’s good enough for him to continue to stick as a starter, but with just the one truly above average pitch at his disposal, it’s still hard not to wonder if he’d be better utilized as a short reliever. He’ll go for three wins in a row Sunday in Houston.

Rocker struck out six and walked two in his fifth scoreless start of the year. The victory was his first since May 19 and third overall against eight losses this year. He’ll try to build on the positive effort against the Rays in a road start on Tuesday.

Garrett Mitchell went 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI as the Brewers bested the Padres 3-1 in Wednesday’s Game 4 to advance to the NLCS.

The league’s top two seeds will meet in the NLCS, with the Brewers getting home-field advantage over the Dodgers. Even bigger than his offensive contribution tonight was Mitchell taking away a two-run homer from Manny Machado in the eighth. He finished the series 4-for-15.

Robert Gasser threw four innings of one-run ball Thursday in the win over the Padres.

It wasn’t clear until this afternoon whether Gasser would get a start in the series, but he did and came through nicely in his first appearance since Sept. 25. Based on this and the way he ended the regular season — he had a 1.67 ERA in his final six starts — he probably ought to be ahead of Dustin May in line for a potential Game 3 start against the Dodgers.

Aaron Ashby kept the Padres hitless for three innings to pick up the win in relief in Wednesday’s Game 4.

Ashby has his first postseason victory after collecting 11 during the regular season. He pitched in three of the four games against the Brewers, turning in 5 2/3 scoreless innings.

Trevor Megill tossed a scoreless ninth inning Wednesday to finish off the Brewers’ NLDS win over the Padres.

Megill threw 3 1/3 scoreless innings in the series, picking up a victory and two saves. He’s allowed just one run in 10 2/3 innings during his postseason career.

Walker Buehler was lifted after allowing one run in three innings Wednesday against the Brewers.

As he did all year, Buehler kept the Padres in the game, which he exited with the score tied 1-1. He ended the regular season with a 4.63 ERA, but he was 9-6 anyway and the Padres were a particularly impressive 22-10 in his starts. One imagines they’ll have some interest in bringing him back in free agency this winter.

Manny Machado went 1-for-4 and just missed a game-tying two-run homer Wednesday in the eighth inning of Game 4 against the Brewers.

Garrett Mitchell prevented the homer. Machado didn’t have a great regular season, but he was the standout performer for the Padres this October, going 7-for-20 with a homer, two doubles and five walks. That was good for a 1.080 OPS, well ahead of Xander Bogaerts at .824 for the best mark on the team.

Hagen Smith will open Game 4 of the ALDS against the Guardians on Thursday.

Smith draws the opening assignment after throwing 21 pitches in relief during Wednesday’s Game 3 loss to the Guardians. He walked a pair of batters and gave up on hit during the abbreviated outing. The 23-year-old southpaw has been a revelation this season and has allowed just one run over 6 1/3 innings this postseason. Ideally, the White Sox would like to jump out to an early lead before turning the ball over the Grant Taylor with a chance to wrap up the series and advance to face the Rays in the ALCS this weekend.

Victor Mesa Jr. blasted a go-ahead two-run homer to propel the Rays to a series-clinching 4-3 victory over the Yankees in Game 3 of the ALDS on Wednesday.

Mesa connected on a hanging slider from Yankees ace Max Fried, sending a majestic 401-foot moonshot into the front row of the right-field seats to put Tampa Bay ahead with two outs in the sixth inning. It was his lone hit in four at-bats, but it made the difference in a low-scoring showdown in New York as the Rays completed a sweep of their division rivals to punch their ticket to the ALCS for the first time since the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. They’ll face either the White Sox or Guardians later this week at Tropicana Field.

Anthony Volpe went 2-for-4 with an RBI double in the Yankees’ season-ending loss to the Rays in Game 3 of the ALDS on Wednesday.

Baseball is a game of inches. Literally. Nobody is more aware of that age-old truism than Volpe as the Yankees were unable to stave off elimination and keep their season alive. It looked momentarily like the much-harangued former top prospect was going to have his signature moment at Yankee Stadium before a replay review overturned a potential game-tying home run to left field due to some fairly obvious fan interference in the sixth inning. He struck out on seven pitches against Rays closer Bryan Baker leading off the ninth as the Yankees were swept out of the postseason by their division rivals.

Bryan Baker fired a scoreless ninth inning to pick up the save in a series-clinching win over the Yankees in Game 3 of the ALDS on Wednesday.

Baker got the call in a save situation for the third consecutive game and managed to once again slam the door. He struck out Anthony Volpe on seven pitches before issuing a four-pitch walk to Spencer Jones. He didn’t look particularly sharp early on, but Rays pitching coach Kyle Snyder was able to somehow get him back on track with a timely mound visit. Baker responded by getting Jazz Chisholm Jr. to ground into a force out before striking out Trent Grisham to end the series.
