Byron Buxton undergoes successful hip surgery

This doesn’t come as a major surprise as Buxton was always expected to require the procedure, though the Twins were holding out hope that he could return and contribute at some point down the stretch. The details of the procedure are not yet known, but Buxton should have plenty of time to recover before the start of the 2027 campaign.

The exact timing remains unclear with Shelton adding that they’re trying to figure out a way for Buxton to contribute at some point before the regular season concludes. It certainly sounds like Buxton, who has been battling lingering hip issues for the past few months, can be safely dropped in all redraft fantasy leagues. There should be a definitive update regarding the exact type of procedure and recovery timeline at some point in the early stages of the offseason.

The Twins took it on a day-to-day basis with Buxton, but ultimately, it made the most sense to sit him down. The expectation is that he’ll require surgery in the offseason to correct the issue. Look for Walker Jenkins to handle the bulk of the action in center field while Buxton is shelved.

It’s a bit unclear whether Buxton will require a trip to the injured list after exiting Tuesday’s game with rip hip discomfort. It’s been an ongoing issue for Buxton over the last few months. The Twins have an off-day before Friday’s series opener against the White Sox if they want to wait before making a decision. There should be additional clarity on his status at some point this week.

Buxton returned from a hip injury 12 days ago and might aggravated that here while trying to run down Henry Bolte’s shot to the gap in right center. One would think another IL stint here would lead to a Walker Jenkins callup, but we’ll see.

Byron Buxton had three hits including a double and a walk in the win over the A’s Monday. Even with the big game, Buxton is 7-for-36 (.194) with no home runs and one RBI in 10 games since being activated from the injured list. He’s hitting .256 with an .836 OPS and 46 RBI this year.

He’ll serve as the 27th man for today’s game in Iowa, and we’re presuming will stick around afterwards. Buxton missed about two weeks with his latest hip impingement and has been hampered by the hip all season; start him while he’s healthy.

Buxton has been on the injured list with a hip impingement since July 29th. He also had an injection to help him battle through his lingering issue. However, reports were that the batting practice session went well, so the 32-year-old could be close to returning. It remains to be seen if the Twins will want to send him out on a rehab assignment.
