Jose Quintana allows three runs in return start

Quintana will face the Mariners tonight after four months off with a sprained elbow. He gave up three runs in 2 1/3 innings Sunday in his second and final rehab start.

The 37-year-old southpaw landed on the injured list with a left elbow sprain after exiting Sunday’s start against the Diamondbacks. He did undergo an MRI exam which revealed a sprain that won’t require surgery, though he will be shelved for at least a couple of months.

No surprise here after Quintana was removed from Sunday’s start against the Diamondbacks with elbow discomfort. No word yet on the severity of the issue, which will determine how much time he misses. The 37-year-old lefty holds a lackluster 5.27 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and 20/17 K/BB ratio across 41 innings over nine starts to kick off his Rockies debut.

Quintana gave up six runs in 1 1/3 innings today. If he lands on the IL, it could be Ryan Feltner coming off the injured list to replace him.

Quintana allowed seven hits and also issued a walk. The southpaw had issues with Justin Foscue, as Foscue was hit a homer and two RBI doubles off Quintana before exiting. He generating just seven swings and misses on 94 pitches, and that’s not a surprise; Quintana hasn’t been a bat-misser for some time now. He’ll take a 4.04 ERA and likely have a similar underwhelming outing against the Diamondbacks come Saturday.

Quintana only struck out two in the outing, and his K% is down to a career-worst in his age-37 campaign. The lack of Ks plus pitching half his games in Coors makes him tough to roster outside the deepest of fantasy formats. His next start lines up at home versus the Rangers.

The 37-year-old southpaw struck out two batters on the day while also issuing a pair of free passes. All of the damage done against him came in the second inning on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Andy Ibanez and an RBI single from Tyrone Taylor. Quintana got seven swings and misses on the day, registering an uninspiring CSW of only 19 percent. He now holds a solid 3.90 ERA and 1.33 WHIP over his first 30 innings with the Rockies despite the fact that he has only 14 strikeouts. He’ll do battle against the Pirates his next time out in Pittsburgh on Wednesday as Quintana continues his revenge tour against his former teams.

Quintana punched out three batters on the night and did not allow a base on balls. The lone tally against him came on a solo homer by Matt Olson in the fourth inning. He got 12 whiffs on 85 pitches on the night, registering a CSW of 25 percent. Quintana exited with a comfortable 6-1 lead and in line for a victory, but the Rockies’ bullpen couldn’t hang on for him. He’ll carry a respectable 4.07 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and a 12/11 K/BB ratio into Wednesday’s matchup against the Mets.

He fared so well against Juan Soto that the Rockies left him in to retire him a third time to start the sixth before lifting him. Quintana had five strikeouts, which is one more than in his first three starts combined, and lowered his ERA from 6.23 to 4.91. Next up for him is a home start against Atlanta.

It’ll be made up as a doubleheader at Citi Field on Sunday instead. Saturday’s original starters — Jose Quinatana and Kodai Senga — will presumably take the ball during Sunday’s twin bill instead.
