Pete Crow-Armstrong swiped his 40th base of the season in Thursday’s victory over the Marlins, becoming just the seventh player in MLB history to have a 40-homer/40-stolen base season.

He joins Shohei Ohtani (2024), Ronald Acuna Jr. (2023), Alfonso Soriano (2006), Alex Rodriguez (1998), Barry Bonds (1996) and Jose Canseco (1988) to accomplish the remarkable feat. Soon he’s likely to add a National League MVP award to his list of honors. Crow-Armstrong finished the afternoon 1-for-3 with a walk and a single and is now slashing a robust .280/.373/.575 to go with 45 homers, 107 RBI, 119 runs scored and 40 stolen bases in what has been an exceptional season.
Diaz is a 'massive linchpin' in Rays' lineup
Eric Samulski and James Schiano break down why Yandy Diaz is a crucial piece to the Tampa Bay Rays' lineup in this World Series and how he is one of the most underrated hitters in the MLB.

Crow-Armstrong did draw a walk in Game 1, but he went 0-for-7 with four strikeouts as the Cubs’ leadoff hitter in the series. Alex Bregman went 0-for-8 in the two hole behind him. Crow-Armstrong also didn’t help matters tonight by wasting a challenge during the very first at-bat of the game. It’s definitely not how he was looking forward to completing his MVP campaign. However, through 10 career postseason games, he’s 5-for-34 with no extra-base hits and a 16/2 K/BB ratio.

Chicago manager Craig Counsell will stick with a near-identical lineup, with the exception of Matt Shaw at the hot corner instead of Pedro Ramírez, after Tuesday’s unexpected Game 1 shutout loss at the hands of Michael King and the Padres. Crow-Armstrong struck out three times in four plate appearances in that defeat. Here’s the full lineup: Crow-Armstrong (CF), Alex Bregman (DH), Michael Busch (1B), Seiya Suzuki (RF), Ian Happ (LF), Nico Hoerner (2B), Matt Shaw (3B), Carson Kelly (C) and Dansby Swanson (SS).

A tough first playoff game for Crow-Armstrong, with the only positive being a walk. The MVP favorite was fortunate not to get kicked out after arguing a check-swing third strikeout in a game where the Cubs only managed three hits through the game. PCA and Chicago will get a chance to bounce back in a must-win game for the Cubs on Wednesday in San Diego.

Bregman is ready for the start of the postseason after returning to Chicago’s lineup less than one week after suffering multiple facial fractures when he was hit by a foul ball in the on-deck circle. It’ll be rookie Pedro Ramírez filling in at the hot corner with Bregman limited to DH as he continues to recover. Here’s the full lineup for Tuesday’s series opener in San Diego: Pete Crow-Armstrong (CF), Bregman (DH), Michael Busch (1B), Seiya Suzuki (RF), Ian Happ (LF), Nico Hoerner (2B), Ramírez (3B), Carson Kelly (C) and Dansby Swanson (SS).

Crow-Armstrong wraps up a phenomenal season that should see him become the unanimous NL MVP Award winner with a .280/.372/.570 triple-slash line, 119 runs scored, 45 home runs, 107 RBI and 41 stolen bases across 162 games. The 24-year-old made the leap to fantasy superstardom this season with the seventh 40-40 campaign in baseball history, becoming the first player in Cubs history to accomplish the feat. He’ll lead Chicago into the postseason when they open their best-of-three NL Wild Card Series against the Padres on Tuesday.

Crow-Armstrong has his 40/40 season and NL MVP honors all locked up, but still to be seen if whether he’ll finish a rare 10 bWAR season. He entered today with 9.9, and that probably didn’t go up with a .125/.222/.125 doubleheader. Aaron Judge has the only 10 bWAR seasons of the decade, coming in at 10.8 in 2022 and 10.9 in 2024. Mike Trout also has two such seasons and Mookie Betts has one, but no National Leaguer has finished at 10 since Barry Bonds in 2004.

Crow-Armstrong, bouncing back after going 0-for-10 in the first two games of the series, is now tied with Kyle Schwarber for the major league lead with 45 homers. He’s first with 118 runs scored and third with 107 RBI. The steal today was his 38th, and there’s little doubt he’ll get the two he needs for 40 during the Cubs’ final six games.

Javier never really had it in this one. He put himself in trouble instantly by walking the first two batters of the game, but narrowly escaped that jam with two pop-ups. Then the Royals put runners on the corners with one out in the second and again he managed to find a way out of that without a run on the board. Finally the Royals got some runs across in the fourth when John Rave socked a two-run home run. Despite another threat in the sixth, those would be the only two runs on Javier’s final ledger. Just a bit less crisp than he had been lately, Javier struggled to put hitters away and that led to both too many base runners and too much traffic for him to navigate through six innings. He’s tentatively lined up for a two-start week to close the season against both the Mariners and Athletics on the road. Just be advised upcoming schedules are merely a guess this time of year.

There’s really no stopping this guy. In addition to the two homers, Crow-Armstrong hit his eighth triple too. There isn’t a shadow of a doubt that he’s going to win his first MVP award and now with 44 home runs, he has a shot to chase down Kyle Schwarber for the league-high in that department. Apart from the many, many steps forward he’s taken as a power hitter. It’s been amazing to watch Crow-Armstrong’s eye develop this season. The walk he drew in this game was his 78th. He drew 50 combined over the last two full seasons. There’s no better spectacle in the game right now and it’s going to be a treat to watch this version of Crow-Armstrong in the playoffs.

Crow-Armstrong was a one-man wrecking crew in the win over the Braves Monday. He had four of the Cubs’ 10 hits, including two of the teams’ four extra-base hits, and knocked in four of the Cubs’ seven runs. Crow-Armstrong’s home run was his 42nd and his steal was his 37th. With a 40/40 season in his sights, expect him to continue to be aggressive on the bases.

Facing elimination, the Rays will start Griffin Jax in Game 4 against the Brewers.

Jax last started Game 3 against the Guardians in the ALCS and allowed three runs over four innings in what turned out to be a 3-2 loss for the Rays. It’ll be his first career World Series appearance.

Jackson Chourio went 4-for-5 with an RBI double and a steal as the Brewers decimated the Rays 10-1 on Monday to open up a 3-0 lead in the World Series.

Chourio singled and scored in a two-run third and then had a two-hits as part of an eight-run fifth inning in which the Brewers collected seven straight hits with two outs. He has eight hits through three World Series games, and if things continue to play out like this, series MVP honors will probably come down to him or William Contreras. Game 4 is slated for Tuesday night. Both starters are TBA, though Griffin Jax and Dustin May figure to be involved.

Robert Gasser faced the minimum over six innings as the Brewers crushed the Rays in Game 3 on Monday.

Gasser gave up a Yandy Díaz single to begin the bottom of the first, but he faced only three batters then after Chandler Simpson, who barely beat out a double play ball on which Díaz was retired, was caught stealing. The only other batter to reach was Victor Mesa Jr. on a walk in the sixth, and he was erased on a Nick Fortes double play. Gasser’s three postseason starts have seen him give up only one run in 15 innings. It’s a distant concern right now, but he’s probably locked up his spot in the 2027 rotation.

Pitching in a game for the first time since July 4, Brandon Woodruff allowed one run in the ninth Monday to finish off Game 3 against the Rays.

Woodruff, returning from a shoulder injury, allowed one run on a soft infield single and a ringing double from Yandy Díaz, but he looked fine in averaging 91.2 mph with his fastball and topping out at 93.1 mph. It was his first postseason appearance since the 2021 NLDS, when he lost a 3-0 game to the Braves and later pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief.

Freddy Peralta was charged with five runs in 4 2/3 innings in losing Game 3 of the World Series against the Brewers.

Peralta surrendered two runs in the third on three singles and a walk. The rest of the damage came in the fifth, which was very nearly a scoreless frame. However, an overturned call correctly got Christian Yelich second base ahead of Junior Caminero’s relay on a grounder to third with two outs. Peralta was then pulled with the bases loaded, and the Brewers went on to score eight runs, collecting four straight hits off Cam Booser and two more off Cole Sulser before the inning finally concluded. It was probably a very disappointing end to a stellar postseason run for Peralta, who was the ALCS MVP against the Guardians. But there’s still a chance the Rays will rally and give him one more chance.

The Phillies are hiring Peter Fatse as their hitting coach, sources told The Athletic.

Fatse worked from the Red Sox from 2019 until this April, when he was part of the purge that also resulted in Alex Cora’s removal. He had since served as a hitting consultant with the Rays. He’ll be replacing Kevin Long in Philadelphia.

The Brewers are using the same lineup as Games 1 and 2, with Christian Yelich batting third, in Monday’s World Series Game 3 against the Rays.

Nothing the Brewers are doing needs fixing at the moment. The lineup: LF Jackson Chourio, 1B Jake Bauers, DH Yelich, C William Contreras, 2B Brice Turang, CF Garrett Mitchell, SS Cooper Pratt, RF Sal Frelick and 3B David Hamilton.

The Rays are sitting Jonathan Aranda against Brewers left-hander Robert Gasser in Monday’s Game 3.

Aranda has been a platoon player in the past, but not so much recently. He had started all of the Rays’ previous postseason games, and he’s hit .310/.383/.405 in 48 plate appearances. Ryan Vilade is playing first base in his place tonight, and Nick Fortes is catching over Liam Hicks. The lineup: DH Yandy Díaz, 1B Vilade, LF Chandler Simpson, 3B Junior Caminero, 2B Ben Williamson, CF Jonny DeLuca, RF Victor Mesa Jr., C Fortes and SS Taylor Walls.

Joey Loperfido had arthroscopic surgery on his right hip.

The Astros said that the surgery was to “address a labral injury and hip impingement that were identified shortly after the season ended.” Loperfido is not expected to miss time during the regular season, but he will be behind in spring training, which could make it hard for him to make the MLB roster out of camp.
