Brice Turang swats homer in win for Brewers

Turang has been a fixture in the second spot in the Brewers’ lineup in the postseason, but he’ll slide down to the fifth spot in the order with Rays’ right-hander Nick Martinez on the hill on Friday. Jake Bauers moves up to the second spot in the order while Christian Yelich will hit third. Yelich took a seat against left-hander Blake Snell in Game 3 on Wednesday but he’s right back in there as the Brewers’ designated hitter as they look to complete their four-game sweep of the two-time defending World Champions. Turang, who homered during Sunday’s series-opening win, extended Milwaukee’s lead with an RBI single to right-center field off hard-throwing reliever Edgardo Henriquez in the eighth inning. He reached base safely in four of his five plate appearances to help set the table for middle-of-the-order force William Contreras.

Turang tied the game with a shot to center off Tarik Skubal in the fourth inning. It was the first homer and RBI of the postseason for Turang, who scuffled a bit in the four-game series against the Padres. He’ll have a chance to build on this one in Game 2 against Yoshinobu Yamamoto and the Dodgers on Monday.

Chourio, who delivered a game-winning single against San Diego superstar closer Mason Miller in Game 2, and the Brewers have a chance to eliminate the Padres on their home field and punch their ticket to the NLCS for the second consecutive season. Frelick and Hamilton sat in favor of Luis Lara and Joey Ortiz with a left-hander on the mound for the Padres in Game 1 on Saturday, but they’ll jump into the lineup against right-hander Michael King. The Brewers have also shuffled up the order of their lineup. The biggest development here is Lara getting the nod in right field with Jake Bauers at the cold corner over Andrew Vaughn. It doesn’t come as a surprise to see Bauers in the lineup, but the widely-held assumption was that he would be their primary right fielder in the postseason. It’s basically Lara getting the nod over Andrew Vaughn to face Padres lefty Robbie Ray. Turang got the scoring started for the Brewers in the bottom of the first inning when he doubled to drive in Garrett Mitchell to put his team up 1-0. Turang’s two-RBI single in the bottom of the eight inning kick-started a four-run inning for the Brewers, which proved to be enough to secure the 101st win of the season for the Brewers. Turang is slashing .368/.484/.592 in September with 11 extra-base hits and 19 RBI and appears primed for the postseason.

Turang’s homer was his 20th and the double was his 35th. Now he just needs one more steal this weekend to get to 20 of those. Who would have thought a couple of years ago that the steals might cost him a 20/20 season? He had seven homers and 50 steals in 2024.

Turang’s home run was his 19th of the season. He hit a two-run shot off Brady Singer in the first inning. Turang has five hits, two home runs and six RBI over his last two games. He’s hitting .263 with an .803 OPS and 92 RBI.
