Reds acquired 1B/OF Nick Longhi from the Red Sox in exchange for international bonus pool money.

The Red Sox inked top Venezuelan prospect Daniel Flores, among others, in the July 2 signing period and needed a little extra cash in their allotted pool. Longhi’s numbers in the minors so far have been underwhelming, but the 21-year-old was ranked by MLB.com as the No. 9 prospect in the system.

Ronald Acuña Jr. left Saturday’s game in the second inning with an apparent left hamstring injury.

The Braves are calling it left hamstring tightness, though that doesn’t mean much of anything. Acuña grabbed his hamstring coming out of the box after hitting a groundball. He continued down to first, and it didn’t appear to be a particularly severe injury. Best-case scenario, it might have even been just a cramp. Still, the better bet is that he’s going to miss some time. That would likely mean more shortstop starts for Jorge Mateo, with Mauricio Dubón playing right field.

Will Wilson

SEA 2nd Baseman #7

Mariners placed INF Will Wilson on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to Apr. 30, with a fractured left thumb.

Wilson was likely to head back to Triple-A when Brendan Donovan is activated, but now he’ll get a little extra service time. He was 1-for-6 in two games since being called up on Apr. 20, though that one hit was a homer.

Jhonny Pereda

Mariners recalled C Jhonny Pereda from Triple-A Tacoma.

Pereda will help out behind the plate with Cal Raleigh apparently injured. The 30-year-old was hitting .333/.418/.436 in 92 plate appearances for Tacoma.

Arjun Nimmala

TOR Shortstop #78

2023 first-round pick Arjun Nimmala is being promoted to Double-A by the Blue Jays.

The 20-year-old Nimmala returned to High-A Vancouver to begin this year, but he wasn’t left there long. He hit .241/.360/.382 with four homers and two steals in 22 games. Nimmala probably won’t be ready before 2028, but he could be the Jays’ shortstop of the future.

Jackson Chourio

MIL Center Fielder #11

Jackson Chourio left his rehab game in Triple-A on Saturday after fouling a ball off his back foot.

Chourio finished the at-bat, but he didn’t come back out for defense. The Brewers said he was pulled as a precaution. He was playing in his third Triple-A game as he makes his way back from a broken hand.

Brice Matthews

HOU Left Fielder #0

Brice Matthews went 2-for-3 with a three-run homer and a walk Saturday in the Astros’ 6-3 win over the Red Sox.

Matthews put three on the board and probably kept a couple off it with a fantastic jumping catch against the center field wall to rob Willson Contreras of a double in the fourth. A week ago, it seemed like a given that Matthews would head back to Triple-A once the Astros got healthier. However, he’s gone 9-for-21 with two homers and six RBI in his last five games, raising his OPS from .497 to .725.

Spencer Arrighetti

HOU Starting Pitcher #41

Despite allowing five hits and five walks, Spencer Arrighetti held the Red Sox to one run in five innings to win Saturday.

The Red Sox left eight men on base in Arrighetti’s final three innings of work, with Arrighetti getting a big assist from Brice Matthews on a jumping catch at the wall in center. Arrighetti, who has won all four of his starts, lowered his ERA to 1.96 today, even as his WHIP jumped to 1.30. He’s a big flyball pitcher who still walks a few too many, so mixed-league fantasy value might not last. He’s slated to face the Reds next weekend.

Bryan King

HOU Relief Pitcher #74
Bryan King worked a perfect ninth versus the Red Sox for his second save Saturday.

Enyel De Los Santos, the Astros’ most frequent closer of late, came into this one to begin the sixth and was charged with one run in 1 2/3 innings of an inning (the one run came after he departed with in the seventh with two outs and a runner on first). That left Kai-Wei Teng in a setup role and King to close. The lefty needed just six pitches to put together a one-two-three inning.

HOU Relief Pitcher #17

Kai-Wei Teng earned a hold for pitching 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief Saturday against the Red Sox.

Teng, who started and pitched three innings Wednesday, appeared to be the likely choice to start Sunday’s game. Instead, he’s back in the pen for now, and Cody Bolton will start. Teng has been the Astros’ best reliever with a 2.57 ERA in 21 innings.
