Oneil Cruz clobbered a solo homer on Thursday, leading the Pirates to a 6-5 extra-inning Opening Day victory over the Marlins.
Pittsburgh emerged victorious in a 12-inning Opening Day marathon that took nearly four hours to complete. Cruz’s torrid spring training performance carried over into this one as he launched a game-tying eighth-inning solo shot to left-center field off Marlins reliever Sixto Sánchez. The 25-year-old shortstop batted sixth in this one, which is pretty surprising, and seems unlikely to continue for very long.
