The Cubs are acquiring starter Michael Soroka from the Nationals, according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal.

Soroka’s fastball velocity has been trending in the wrong direction over the last few weeks, but the Cubs are going to gamble that he’ll provide some stability in the back-end of their rotation mix. The 27-year-old impending free agent has posted a respectable 4.87 ERA and 87/24 K/BB ratio across 81 1/3 innings (16 starts) this season for the Nationals.

Paul Sewald

Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports that the Diamondbacks have agreed to a one-year, $1.5 million contract to reunite with right-hander Paul Sewald.

The 35-year-old hurler previously pitched for the Diamondbacks in 2023 and 2024. He split his 2025 campaign between the Guardians and the Tigers where he registered a 4.58 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and a 20/6 K/BB ratio over 19 2/3 innings in his 22 appearances. He’ll give the Diamondbacks another capable high-leverage arm to work at the back end of their bullpen.

CWS Starting Pitcher #33

Drew Thorpe told reporters on Thursday that he’s dealing with a bit of tendinitis in his surgically repaired right elbow.

The encouraging news is that he had a follow-up visit with Dr. Keith Meister who confirmed that the ligament looks good. While the issue isn’t believed to be serious, it has slowed Thorpe’s progression in his recovery from Tommy John surgery. He is still playing catch and is hopeful to throw off of a mound for the first time at some point within the next three weeks.

Nabil Crismatt

TEX Relief Pitcher #61

Rangers’ general manager Chris Young told reporters on Thursday that right-hander Nabil Crismatt will undergo elbow surgery.

It’s a tough break for the 31-year-old hurler who had been slated to compete for Team Colombia in the upcoming World Baseball Classic. No word yet on how long he’ll be shelved for, it’ll ultimately depend on which procedure he undergoes.

Lars Nootbaar

STL Outfield #21

Lars Nootbaar (heel) will be a late arrival to the Cardinals’ spring training camp.

The 28-year-old outfielder is working his way back from surgery on both heels and is currently going through a running progression on an altered gravity treadmill. The issue is that the Cardinals have not had one delivered to their spring complex yet, so Nootbaar will continue to rehab at home until it arrives. His availability for Opening Day remains in question.

Christian Encarnacion-Strand

CIN Infield #33

Reds’ skipper Terry Francona told reporters on Thursday that Christian Encarnacion-Strand tweaked his hamstring in January and is likely to miss the team’s first couple of Cactus League games.

The 26-year-old slugger is currently on a running progression that he’ll need to work through before he’s cleared for live game action. It doesn’t sound like it should impact his availability for the start of the regular season, though any missed time during Cactus League play could hurt his chances of cracking the team’s Opening Day roster.

Max Muncy

LAD Infield #13

Dodgers signed INF Max Muncy to a one-year, $10 million contract extension.

The deal will pay Muncy $7 million for the 2027 season and includes a $10 million club option for the 2028 season with a $3 million buyout. The 35-year-old slugger slashed .243/.376/.470 with 19 homers and 67 RBI in just 100 games for the Dodgers during the 2025 campaign.

Sebastian Walcott

TEX Shortstop #89

Rangers’ general manager Chris Young told reporters on Thursday that top prospect Sebastian Walcott will undergo surgery to repair a UCL tear in his elbow.

The 19-year-old shortstop was shut down during the Arizona Fall League due to what had been termed as arm fatigue. It seems there was a more serious underlying elbow issue at play. The Rangers are hopeful that he’ll be able to undergo the internal brace procedure rather than the full Tommy John surgery, which would give him a quicker timeline to return. Either way though, Walcott is expected to miss the bulk of the 2026 season while recovering.

Ben Lively

CLE Starting Pitcher #39

Guardians re-signed RHP Ben Lively to a two-year minor league contract.

Lively was removed from the team’s 40-man roster back in November and the veteran right-hander elected free agency. He’s in the process of recovering from Tommy John surgery and is expected to miss most of the 2026 season. He has already reported to the Guardians’ spring training facility and will continue his rehab in a familiar setting.

Andrew Nardi

MIA Pitcher #43

Andrew Nardi (back) through around 30 pitches during a successful bullpen session on Wednesday.

The session included one up/down, simulating a break in-between innings. 27-year-old hurler wound up missing the entire 2025 season due to a lower back issue that cropped up during spring training. If healthy, he could provide a major and unexpected boost to the Marlins’ bullpen heading into 2026.

Gunnar Henderson

Gunnar Henderson left Orioles’ spring training camp to tend to a personal matter.

The 24-year-old superstar is expected to return to the club’s spring training facility on Sunday. This won’t have any impact on Henderson’s ability to get himself ready in time for the start of the regular season and shouldn’t impact his fantasy draft stock at all. He has been the third shortstop drafted on average in early drafts, behind only Bobby Witt Jr. and Elly De La Cruz.
