Hurter was the Tigers’ third pitcher of the game, entering in the third inning. He allowed two hits, walked one and struck out two while throwing just 38 pitches to get his 10 outs. We’d still like to see what Hurter could do as a regular starter, but outings like this are as close as he gets in Detroit. Since debuting in 2024, he’s 14-4 with a 2.35 ERA in 126 1/3 innings over five starts and 62 relief appearances.

The deal also includes a club option for the 2029 season. Financial terms of the deal have yet to be disclosed. The 32-year-old right-hander has functioned as one of the best setup men in the game for most of the past four seasons and he holds a terrific 2.21 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 31/8 K/BB ratio over 36 2/3 innings in his 48 appearances this season.

The A’s needed to clear a spot on their 40-man roster for the addition of Jonathan Ornelas on Friday and unfortunately it looks like Zhong-Ao Zhuang drew the short straw this time. He has really struggled in 15 appearances (12 starts) at the Triple-a level this season, posting a 7.84 ERA, 1.78 WHIP and a 42/28 K/BB ratio across 59 2/3 innings. He could attract some interest on waivers.

The Athletics had plenty of outfield depth on their major league roster and wanted to add an extra infielder instead for their weekend series against the Tigers so Thomas gets the boot. The 25-year-old has hit just .202/.235/.333 with four homers, 11 RBI and a 37/4 K/BB ratio in 121 plate appearances with the A’s this season.

The 26-year-old infielder joined the Athletics last week on a minor league pact after being released by the Yankees. He has hit an impressive .311/.378/.505 with 11 homers, 46 RBI and 11 stolen bases in 308 plate appearances at the Triple-A level this season. If he works his way into regular playing time with the A’s, he could carve out some value in deeper mixed leagues.

The 28-year-old hurler has shown flashes of brilliance during his first season stateside, but they have been few and far between. He didn’t make it out of the first inning in his last start, walking four of the first seven hitters that he faced against the Angels. Any lingering mixed league value that he may have had in deeper formats vanishes with the move to the bullpen.

Karros had missed each of the team’s previous two games due to inflammation in his left biceps. He’s right back in there at the hot corner and will bat fifth for the Rockies against Royals’ right-hander Michael Wacha on Friday evening at Coors Field.

He’ll take the roster spot that was vacated as Chase Silseth was dealt to the Rangers. Murphy, a fourth-round selection from the 2021 draft class, had pitched to a ridiculous 0.71 ERA, 0.82 WHIP and a 47/10 K/BB ratio over 38 innings while recording 18 saves at Double-A Rocket City. If he continues to have that sort of success with the Angels, he should put himself in the high leverage mix in relatively short order, making him an interesting speculative add for those chasing saves in deeper leagues.

The Tigers scratched Casey Mize from his scheduled start as they’re trying to trade him before Monday’s deadline and didn’t want to risk an injury. Expect a full bullpen game against the A’s on Friday evening in West Sacramento.

With Brenton Doyle set to return from the injured list on Friday, something had to give, and Fulford wound up being the odd man out. The 27-year-old backstop hit .177/.254/.290 with just one homer and seven RBI in 71 plate appearances during his time with the Rockies.

Jones, starting against LHP Shota Imanaga, blasted a 418-foot dinger in the fifth inning to provide the final scoreline. Jones has enough power (four homers) and speed (three stolen bases) to be a fantasy factor if he keeps getting consistent playing time, so proving he can handle left-handed pitching is crucial for him. Jones is hitting .265/.324/.500 in his last 15 games and .236/.327/.416 in 89 at bats on the season.
