Joyce sat between 98 and 101 mph on his four-seam fastball in this one; however, he also threw just seven of his 15 pitches for strikes. He still has a few more rehab appearances to go before he joins the Angels’ bullpen, but it’s nice to see the velocity is already back to where we’d like it to be.

Machado is still hitting just .204. but he’s now tied for 11th in the majors in homers and for 28th with 59 RBI. Even if this winds up being the worst season of his career, he’ll probably get to 30 homers an eighth time and maybe to 100 RBI for a fifth time.

Buehler allowed just two hits, which allowed him to work around five walks. He’s issued 17 free passes over 22 innings in his last five starts, three of which were rather ugly. Still, even though he has a 5.23 ERA and isn’t pitching very deep into games, the Padres are an impressive 13-7 in his starts this season. He’s due to face the Marlins on Sunday.

López’s velocity was pretty good — he averaged 95.3 mph with his fastball and an especially high 85.9 mph with his slider — but he allowed two homers, seven other hits and three walks. This is two poor outings in a row, so his rotation status might again be in jeopardy, especially with the deadline coming up. The loss leaves him 4-3 with a 3.95 ERA. That seems fine, of course, but he had a 3.74 ERA the first time he was pulled from the rotation in April. As is, he’s slated to face the Orioles on Sunday.

Ritchie surrendered homers to Manny Machado and Fernando Tatis Jr. in the 8-3 loss. He’ll be unavailable for a few days after throwing 68 pitches tonight, so it seems pretty likely that he’ll be the pitcher sent down to make room for Martín Pérez on Wednesday.

Tatis has three homers in four games and is now up to eight for the year after going his first 55 games without one. He finished tonight with a .752 OPS, his highest mark after any game this season.

Albies isn’t exactly struggling this month, but he has fanned 21 times in just 17 games, which is incredibly unusual. In fact, it’s the most times he’s struck out in a month since Sept. 2021. He struck out just nine times in 23 games in June. Of course, Albies really hasn’t been hot at any point since April; he’s batting .234/.289/.381 since May 1.

Romano took the mound in the top of the ninth, tasked with closing out the game after the Rockies took a one-run lead in the bottom of the eighth. He shut the door on the Nats, striking out two batters in a clean inning to convert his seventh save of the season.

Lorenzen surrendered a two-run homer to CJ Abrams in the first inning. Abrams got to Lorenzen again in the third with another two-run blast. James Wood would bring home two more for the Nats with a double in the fourth. That would do it for Lorenzen, leaving with two outs in the inning at 80 pitches. He struck out five. The 34-year-old right-hander will take a 6.53 ERA, 1.79 WHIP, and a 78/39 K/BB ratio across 100 2/3 innings into a start against the Padres in San Diego next Tuesday.

Carson Palmquist opened for the Nationals and tossed a scoreless first inning before giving up four in the second. He was chased with two outs in the inning at 36 pitches. Mikes Mikolas took over and recorded the final out, then gave up a run in the third on a double and two groundouts. Two hits in the fifth and a solo homer in the sixth brought two more runs in for Colorado before Mikolas departed with one out in the sixth inning. He struck out one. The 37-year-old right-hander ends the day with a 5.60 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, and a 51/20 K/BB ratio across 98 innings. His next outing is scheduled for Monday at home against the Blue Jays.

Pérez will come off the injured list after missing just over two weeks with a forearm contusion. The well-traveled 35-year-old has compiled a respectable 3.54 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 62/32 K/BB ratio across 81 1/3 innings this season.
