Mets sent 1B/OF Eric Wagaman outright to Triple-A Syracuse.

Wagaman went unclaimed on waivers after being removed from New York’s 40-man roster last weekend. The 28-year-old will remain with the Mets as organizational depth rather than elect free agency to test the open market.

Angels fired Pitching Coach Mike Maddux, Bullpen Coach Dom Chiti, and Assistant Pitching Coach Darryl Scott.

Maddux seemed like a slam dunk hire after he led the Rangers’ pitching staff in 2025, but things have not worked out in Los Angeles. The Angels rank 8th in strikeout rate but 24th in ERA, 25th in WHIP, and 30th in walk rate. Tim Leveque has been named the interim pitching coach.

Justin Martinez (elbow) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Reno.

Martinez had Tommy John surgery last June and is now in the final steps of his recovery. Given how long he’s been out, the Diamondbacks will likely want to keep him in Triple-A for a couple weeks and have him build up to back-to-backs, but he should return to the Diamondbacks bullpen by the end of the month.

Athletics claimed LHP Drew Rom off waivers from the Brewers.

Rom was limited to just 5 2/3 innings out of the bullpen for the Brewers this season, but had a 3.18 ERA. He also had a stellar 2.20 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, and 61/11 K.BB ratio in 41 innings at Triple-A Nashville. This could be a nice addition to the A’s bullpen. They could also try to stretch him out since he was a starting pitcher up until this season.

The Athletic’s Dan Hayes reported that the “Twins also were in discussions for Reid Detmers and Jose Soriano.”

Those are some interesting names to hear that the Twins were in trade deadline discussions for because the only starting pitcher they wound up acquiring was Dean Kremer. It’s unclear if the Twins balked at the Angels’ asking price or if the Twins were interested in other starting pitchers across the league, but they seemed to want to take a big swing with their rotation, and it just didn’t pan out.

Yankees released RHP Rafael Montero from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

The veteran was pitching to a 5.67 ERA in 27 innings at Triple-A this season. He has a 4.68 ERA in 380 MLB appearances.

Luis Gil (shoulder) is starting a rehab assignment at High-A Hudson Valley

Gil has been on the injured list at Triple-A since May 8th due to inflammation in his shoulder, so he will need plenty of time to build his innings back up. Given that he had already been sent to the minors before the injury, it’s a long shot that he pitches meaningful innings for the Yankees this season.

Joe Ryan (glute) threw on flat ground on Monday.

Ryan was placed on the injured list with a glute strain on Friday, so it’s good news that he’s already throwing. Of course, throwing off flat ground means he’s not pushing off in the same way he would on a mound, which would test his glute a bit more. We may be looking at a minimum stay on the IL for Ryan, but he’ll need to progress to a mound at some point this week.

Byron Buxton (hip) took pre-game batting practice on Monday.

Buxton has been on the injured list with a hip impingement since July 29th. He also had an injection to help him battle through his lingering issue. However, reports were that the batting practice session went well, so the 32-year-old could be close to returning. It remains to be seen if the Twins will want to send him out on a rehab assignment.

The Athletic’s Spencer Nusbaum reports that the Nationals will call up LHP prospect Jackson Kent this week.

The 23-year-old has posted a 3.72 ERA in 94 1/3 innings across Double-A and Triple-A this season. Kent has a four-pitch mix and added velocity this season, which led to a big boost in strikeouts in Double-A. In 63 2/3 innings at Triple-A, he posted a respectable 25 percent strikeout rate. He remains more of a pitchability-over-stuff prospect, so it remains to be seen how his arsenal will translate to the MLB level.

Mike Burrows (elbow) will make a rehab start for Triple-A Sugar Land on Friday.

Burrows was optioned to Triple-A on July 7th, but then that assignment was voided when he was placed on the injured list on July 13th. He’s been sidelined for almost a month, so he’ll need a few rehab starts but could simply remain in the Triple-A rotation even when his rehab is done.
