Luis Severino was removed from Friday night’s start against the Yankees after one inning due to right arm soreness.

Severino didn’t look like himself in the opening frame, giving up four runs including a three-run blast to Paul Goldschmidt. He also had this start moved back a couple of days earlier in the week, so it’s possible there was an underlying injury concern already at play. Don’t be surprised if Severino winds up spending some time on the injured list over this one.

Luis Peña is being promoted to Double-A Biloxi, the Brewers announced.

Peña, the reported centerpiece of the Brewers’ offer for Tarik Skubal, was hitting .298/.384/.420 with 27 steals in 51 games for High-A Wisconsin. The 19-year-old is probably looking at a move off shortstop at some point, but his offensive potential could still make him an All-Star-type player elsewhere.

With Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Brandon Pfaadt on his game, James Schiano breaks down what has changed since Pfaadt returned from the minor leagues to have not allowed an earned run in his last four starts.

JJ Bleday is out of the Reds’ starting lineup in the first game of Monday’s doubleheader.

It’s the first time he’s sat since July 29. Bleday will almost surely be back in there for game two, since even though he’s slumping — he’s hitting .146 with one RBI in 14 games this month — Terry Francona views him as the team’s one everyday outfielder. Michael Toglia is starting in left against lefty Quinn Mathews in game one.

With JJ Wetherholt resting, the Cardinals have Joshua Báez leading off in the first game of Monday’s doubleheader against the Reds.

Báez, who hit fifth in his first two major league games, figures to return to the middle of the order for the nightcap.

Reds selected the contract of LHP Kent Emanuel from Triple-A Louisville.

The 34-year-old Emanuel is back in the majors for the first time since 2024 with the Marlins. He pitched in Mexico and an indy ball last year, and he joined the Reds organization out of indy ball last week, allowing one run over six innings in his lone start for Louisville. He’ll be available to go long in relief in Monday’s doubleheader if necessary.

Reds designated RHP Ron Marinaccio for assignment.

Despite having thrown 21 pitches Friday, Marinaccio was left in to throw 47 more and give up five runs at the end of Saturday’s loss to the Pirates. He wound up being charged with 10 runs over 5 1/3 innings in four mop-up appearances during his two weeks in Cincinnati.

Zach McCambley has joined the Reds as their 27th player for Monday’s doubleheader.

McCambley gets the unofficial callup six days after being demoted by the Reds. He’s given up four runs in 7 2/3 innings in seven major league relief appearances this season.

Marcelo Mayer went 1-for-6 with four strikeouts as Triple-A Sacramento’s leadoff man on Sunday.

Mayer, out since late June with a stress reaction in his forearm, is 5-for-14 with a homer in three games since joining the River Cats. They might wait a few more days, but the Giants will likely activate him this week and install him as their starting second baseman.

Joel Kuhnel pitched 1 1/3 hitless innings Sunday in his latest rehab outing for Triple-A Nashville.

Kuhnel, out since July 4 with a shoulder impingement, gave up two runs in his first rehab appearance on Aug. 2, but he’s pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings since. It seems like he’s ready to be activated if the Brewers want him back.

Sal Frelick doubled in four at-bats in his seventh game for Triple-A Nashville on Sunday.

Frelick, on the IL with a shoulder strain, is 5-for-22 with a homer and five walks since joining Nashville. He could come off the IL and replace Brandon Lockridge on the Brewers’ roster on Tuesday, but given the way he performed before landing on the IL, there’s no need for the team to make him a lineup fixture right away.

Bobby Miller, on the 60-day IL with shoulder soreness, tossed three scoreless frames for Triple-A Oklahoma City on Sunday.

Miller struck out three and averaged 97.3 mph with his fastball in his third minor league appearance. The Dodgers will eventually need to activate him from the injured list and likely will option him to Triple-A when it happens, but perhaps he’ll see some bullpen time in September.
