Orioles placed RHP Ryan Helsley on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to April 29, with right elbow inflammation.

The closer madness continues. Helsley had been one of the top performers in the league at the position, posting a 2.53 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and a 15/7 K/BB ratio over his first 10 2/3 innings while converting each of his first seven save chances. No word yet on the severity of the injury or on how long the Orioles expect their closer to be shelved for. Albert Suarez was promoted from Triple-A Norfolk in a corresponding move on Friday.

Ildemaro Vargas extended his hitting streak to 27 games with a 4-for-4 afternoon against the Cubs on Friday.

He also walked in his final at-bat, and somehow managed only one RBI and zero runs scored despite reaching base every single at-bat. Vargas is hitting .404 with a 1.131 OPS, as everyone suspected would happen before the season. Fantasy managers are advised to keep riding the hot streak and understand that this is likely just a prolonged heater, not a new norm, for Vargas. It’s still a lot of fun.

BOS Starting Pitcher #35

Red Sox’ interim manager Chad Tracy told reporters on Friday that the MRI on the injured shoulder of star southpaw Garrett Crochet came back clean.

Tracy noted that the imaging revealed nothing more than inflammation, which is the best possible news that the Red Sox and fantasy managers could hear at this time. He’ll be shut down from throwing for a few days while he builds up strength in his shoulder before he starts to ramp back up. Still no firm timetable on when they expect him to return, but it doesn’t appear to be as dire as originally feared.

TB Starting Pitcher #44

Tampa Bay Times’ Marc Topkin reports Ryan Pepiot will undergo hip surgery and miss the rest of the season.

Kevin Cash said that Pepiot felt instability in his hip while playing catch on Monday, and it turned out that this was exactly as bad as it sounded. Pepiot finishes the year without throwing a pitch in the major leagues. The 28-year-old will attempt a comeback in 2027. Pepiot was already on the 60-day injured list.
Trea Turner

PHI Shortstop #7

Trea Turner is not in Philadelphia’s starting lineup for Friday’s game against the Marlins.

No explanation given, so we’re assuming it’s just a rest day after playing both ends of a doubleheader on Thursday. Edmundo Sosa is batting fifth and playing shortstop in Turner’s absence.

CHC 2nd Baseman #2

Nico Hoerner left Friday’s game against the Diamondbacks with “left-sided neck tightness.”

Matt Shaw pinch-hit and took over at second base. This doesn’t sound especially serious at this point, but we’re sure we’ll get a real update at some point in the next 24 hours. Hoerner had already gotten a hit and scored a run, and was hitting .291/.370/.449 with four homers and seven stolen bases entering the game — he’s been one of the MVPs for fantasy baseball up to this point.
Brandon Woodruff

MIL Starting Pitcher #53

Brewers placed RHP Brandon Woodruff on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation.

Woof. It’s not a surprise after Woodruff was pulled in the second inning of his last start with a major velocity drop. Brewers manager Pat Murphy said that Woodruff told him he doesn’t feel like he’s injured, but that it was a dead arm situation. We’ll see where this heads, but shoulder injuries for pitchers are not auspicious signs. The optimistic case is that Woodruff is able to shake this off and return in a few weeks with his regular velocity.
Carlos Mendoza

NYM Manager

Mets general manager David Stearns said the team doesn’t “intend to make a change” at manager.

“We know our record is not what we want, and we know we are capable of more,” Stearns told MLB.com. Anthony DiComo of MLB.com notes that “Stearns and owner Steve Cohen have had no serious conversations about firing Mendoza even as two other prominent managers, Alex Cora of the Red Sox and Rob Thomson of the Phillies, were dismissed last month.” We doubt this will cool the temperature much on Carlos Mendoza’s hot seat — only wins can do that — but it’s noteworthy that Mendoza has the backing of his owner and general manager despite a 10-21 start.
Ketel Marte

Ketel Marte is not in Arizona’s starting lineup for Friday’s game against the Cubs.

Marte missed Tuesday with lower back tightness, but we’re unsure if that’s what is happening here as well. Updates to come when we have them. Ildemaro Vargas, he of the 26-game hitting streak, is playing second base for the Diamondbacks this afternoon. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. is also getting the day game off.
Wyatt Langford

TEX Left Fielder #36

Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reported that Wyatt Langford (forearm) is not expected to be activated from the injured list this weekend.

That had been the expectation, but Langford played in a rehab game in Arizona on Thursday night and felt some “residual soreness” in his forearm. The setback isn’t expected to be a long one, maybe a couple of days, but it will mean that Langford is unlikely to return for this weekend’s series against the Blue Jays.
