Andrew Dodt thrashed RACV Royal Pines Resort for a 7-under-par 34-31=65 before the threat of lightning saw play suspended on day one of the European Tour’s season-opening Australian PGA Championship.
The local man cashed in the calmer morning conditions to post a lap featuring eight birdies against a lone bogey. That was enough for a two-shot clubhouse lead over New Zealand’s Ryan Fox and American Julian Suri. Another U.S. player, Harold Varner, is also at 5-under although he still has four holes to complete. Dodt, who made just seven of 20 cuts last season, got his birdie count going at 12 and 13 before dropping a shot at the next. He got it back with another circle at 13 and then splashed further red at 1, 3, 5 (45-foot putt), 8 and 9. “I wanted to hit the ground running for the 2017 season, hole one, shot one and I managed to do that today,” said the two-time European Tour winner. “I hit it really well, putted really well. It was just a really solid run.” Round one is set to restart at 05.30 local time Friday, with the morning groups teeing off in round two between 07.00 and 09.00 and the second wave going out between 11.45 and 13.45.
