Playing out of the penultimate threesome, first-round quad-leader and World No. 379 Roger Sloan concocted a 1-under-par 33-37=70 in the third round of the 3M Open to post 10-under 203, dipping one spot to T4, two swings short of leader Cameron Tringale (66). UPDATE: Sloan ended with a 1-over 72 (2 birdies, 1 bogey, 1 double), down 12 places to T16 on 9-under 275, and drops to 0-for-2 as an 18-hole leader/co-leader.
This is the Canadian’s 94th career TOUR event and first time in the top 10 thru 54 holes since the opposite-field Barracuda in 2019 during his rookie campaign 43 starts ago. At the Barracuda, he was solo 5th, his previous-best position at the three-quarter mark, and ended with 7 points (Modified Stableford) for T7. The UTEP alum’s career-best finish thus far, and lone top 3, is a back-door T2 at the opposite-field Puerto Rico Open in 2019, where he was solo 14th after 54 holes (70-67-72-67). He’ll play out of the fifth-to-last twosome on Sunday with Texas alum and first-round quad-leader Jhonattan Vegas, who he played with today. The 34-year-old pelted 16 greens in regulation, gaining 1.059 strokes on approach, but lost 0.557 around and posted a -1.307 SG: Putting, lowlighted by a 3-putt double at 10 from 53'2", a missed par-saver at 8 from 6'5", and a missed birdie try at 12 from 5'4", but highlighted by a birdie-bomb at 2 from 45'11", one of four birdies on the round.
