Out of the penultimate twosome, World No. 104 Matt Jones played his final six holes in 6-under for a 12-under-par 31-30=61 in R4 of the Sentry TOC, up one spot to solo 3rd, two shy of overnight co-leader, countryman and champion Cameron Smith (65).
The Aussie, making his second visit and first since 2015 (T11), opened 70-67, and then went nuts on the weekend with 62-61, the 23-under total on the weekend being the best 36-hole score to par in PGA TOUR history. The closing 61, which matched the course record with two others, also matches his career low in 1,098 rounds, a course-record-tying 9-under 61/R1 at last season’s Honda, which he went on to win by five for his second TOUR title, and first since the 2014 Houston Open 174 starts prior. The resurgent 41-year-old, who bags just his sixth podium in 350 events, first since the aforementioned win, tallied four eagles for the week, No. 1 in that stat, and 26 birdies against one double bogey-5 at hole 8/R1, playing his final 64 holes without a blemish en route to a score of 32-under 260. On Sunday, he began T4, six back, and rang up eagles at 13 (hole-out from 85 yards) and 15 (from 3'10"), and eight birdies on 17 greens in regulation, and posted a sterling 4.665 SG: Putting, highlighted by a 51'8" bomb at the 71st hole, and a walk-off 4 at the last from 11'6".
