Canada’s Roger Sloan will make his major championship debut when he makes his first U.S. Open appearance next month after earning his spot via a playoff Monday in final, 36-hole qualifying in Dallas, Texas.
The 35-year-old Sloan, who attended college at Texas-El Paso, carded rounds of 66-69 at Lakewood Country Club and Royal Oaks Country Club to finish at 7-under 135 and advanced via six-man playoff for the final two spots along with Alabama product Davis Shore (65-70). Sloan has made 13 cuts in 20 PGA Tour starts this season, with two top-25 finishes including a T-14 at the Sanderson Farms Championship and T-14 at the American Express. He has five professional victories on his resume, winning the Korn Ferry Tour’s Nova Scotia Open in 2014 and the PGA Tour Canada’s Western Championship in 2011. Thirteen players qualified in Texas for The Country Club in Brookline, Mass., including co-medalists Kurt Kitayama, Matthew NeSmith, Japan’s Jinichiro Kozuma and Sean Crocker. Canada’s Adam Hadwin finished the playoff as first alternate, with Austin Cook as second alternate. Missing out in the playoff was amateur Sandy Scott from Scotland and Shawn Stefani. Graeme McDowell, who won the 2010 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, missed the playoff by a shot, and Matt Kuchar also failed to qualify and is likely to miss the U.S. Open for the first time in 15 years.
