The Edmonton Oilers and Vancouver Canucks both picked up two points in the standings to move a bit closer to the final Wild Card spot in the Western Conference. Edmonton has 66 points through 58 games, while Vancouver has 64 points in 58 matches. The Dallas Stars currently occupy the final Wild Card position in the West with 67 points through 56 contests.

Connor McDavid surpassed the 80-point plateau with a two-point performance on Wednesday. Only Wayne Gretzky (9), Jari Kurri (9) and Mark Messier (8) have more 80-point seasons than McDavid (6) does in Oilers history. His game winner in overtime gave him 30 goals on the year. McDavid has reached the 30-goal mark for six straight seasons

J.T. Miller stretched his point streak to a career-high 10 games on Wednesday night with a four-point performance. He has seven goals and 14 assists during that span.

It was also a noteworthy night for Nicklas Backstrom, who hit 1,000 career points with one goal and one assist. He became the sixth Swedish-born player in NHL history to get to the milestone, joining Mats Sundin, Daniel Alfredsson, Nicklas Lidstrom, Henrik Sedin and Daniel Sedin.

WASHINGTON 3 EDMONTON 4 (OT)

The Oilers rebounded from a late equalizer from the Capitals to get the overtime victory.

Connor McDavid scored the game winner 3:27 into the extra period. He also added an assist in the contest.

Brad Malone also had one goal and one assist in the match

T.J. Oshie produced two goals and one assist along with four shots. He tied the game with just two seconds remaining in regulation.

Nicklas Backstrom had one goal and one helper to reach 1,000 career points.

John Carlson and Evan Bouchard collected two assists apiece.

Kailer Yamamoto (power play) and Cody Ceci found the back of the net for Edmonton in the second period.

Alex Ovechkin had a game-high eight shots on goal.

Anthony Mantha, Evgeny Kuznetsov, Derek Ryan and Zack Kassian supplied one assist each.

Mikko Koskinen stopped 29 shots 20th win of the season.

Ilya Samsonov made 36 saves in the defeat.

MONTREAL 3 VANCOUVER 5

The Canucks won for a third straight time, while ending a modest two-game win streak of the Canadiens.

J.T. Miller generated one goal and three assists to extend his point spree to 10 consecutive matches.

Elias Pettersson and Bo Horvat notched one goal and one assist each for Vancouver.

Artturi Lehkonen accounted for two goals and one assist. He has a five-game point streak.

Rem Pitlick registered one goal and two helpers for Montreal.

Travis Hamonic and Brock Boeser (power play) also lit the lamp for the Canucks.

Cole Caufield. Jake Evans, Tanner Pearson, Quinn Hughes and Brad Hunt recorded one assist each.

Luke Schenn had a game-high six hits.

Thatcher Demko shielded 22 shots for his 26th victory of 2021-22. He has won his past three starts.

Sam Montembeault defended 28 of 32 shots in the loss.
