Vasilevskiy earns his 12th straight win

Andrei Vasilevskiy

Andrei Vasilevskiy

Nathan Ray Seebeck-USA TODAY Sports

Andrei Vasilevskiy wasn’t challenged often on Tuesday, but he still stopped 16 of 17 shots to help the Lightning earn a 2-1 victory. With that, he’s won his last 12 decisions, which puts him tantalizingly close to the NHL record for a regular season winning streak by a goaltender.

Vasilevskiy’s 12-straight wins puts him in a tie with Ross Brooks (1973-74) and Martin Brodeur (1997-98) for seventh place on the all-time list, per TSN’s StatsCentre. The record is 14 wins, which was originally set by Tiny Thompson all the way back in 1929-30 and has since been matched by Tom Barrasso (1992-93), Jonas Hiller (2013-14), and Sergei Bobrovsky (2016-17).

Of course, in Vasilevskiy’s case it helps that the Lightning are an amazing team, but that doesn’t change the fact that he’s an elite goaltender in his own right. He’s finished in the top-three of Vezina Trophy voting in each of his last three years and he’s well on his way to making it four with his 21-3-1 record, 1.83 GAA, and .933 save percentage in 25 starts.[[ad:athena]]

When you combine a star-studded cast with one of the best goaltenders of his era, you get something truly special.

NEW JERSEY 4 PHILADELPHIA 3

Travis Zajac scored the game-winning goal and registered an assist. He’s up to four goals and 14 points in 26 contests.

Yegor Sharangovich also had a goal and an assist for the Devils. That gives him seven goals and 12 points in 28 games.

Mackenzie Blackwood stopped 30 of 33 shots last night. He’s 8-8-1 with a 2.91 GAA and .908 save percentage in 17 starts.

Philadelphia got two goals from Sean Couturier. That gives him eight goals and 21 points in 20 contests.

Carter Hart turned aside 28 of 32 Devils shots. He has an 8-8-3 record, 3.85 GAA, and .875 save percentage in 21 games.

CHICAGO 3 FLORIDA 2

Carl Soderberg accounted the game-winning goal. It was his sixth goal and 13th point in 28 contests.

Two of Chicago’s three goals were scored by Patrick Kane. He has 12 goals and 44 points in 33 games.

Alex Wennberg scored a power-play goal for Florida at 15:22 of the third period. He’s up to seven goals and 15 points in 32 games.

Chris Driedger saved 29 of 32 Blackhawks shots. He has an 8-4-2 record, 2.28 GAA, and .923 save percentage in 14 starts.

At the other end of the ice, Kevin Lankinen stopped 33 of 35 shots. He’s 11-7-4 with a 2.83 GAA and .915 save percentage in 22 games.

NASHVILLE 2 DETROIT 0

Juuse Saros earned a 31-save shutout on Tuesday. He’s been amazing lately, stopping 118 of 120 shots over his last three games. He has a 7-6-0 record, 2.58 GAA, and .919 save percentage in 16 games.

Darren Helm fired a team-high four shots on Saros. He’s been limited to a single goal in 2020-21.

Thomas Greiss stopped 32 of 34 Predators shots. He has a 2-13-4 record, 3.36 GAA, and .889 save percentage in 20 games. Obviously, he’s had some rough games, but even in starts where he allowed two or fewer goals, he only has a 1-4-1 record this season. In other words, even when he’s been good, the Red Wings haven’t offered him much support.

Mikael Granlund scored the first and therefore game-winning goal. It was his sixth goal and 12th point in 29 games.

Mathieu Olivier accounted for the Predators’ other goal. He has two goals and four points in 21 games.

ARIZONA 5 COLORADO 4 (SO)

Jonas Johansson stopped 28 of 32 shots in regulation time. He was beaten in all three shootout rounds, which cost them the extra point.

Adin Hill turned aside 35 of 39 shots prior to the shootout. He was best once in two shootout rounds, but that was good enough to get the win.

Phil Kessel scored a goal and registered an assist for the Coyotes. He has 10 goals and 22 points in 33 contests.

Arizona also got a goal and an assist from Lawson Crouse. He’s up to two goals and five points in 30 games.

Nathan MacKinnon found the back of the net and registered two assists. The Avalanche forward has 10 goals and 35 points in 27 games.
