Gilkey

A 34-game starter at Chadron State, Gilkey is short armed with some athleticism and projects as a potential let guard in time. He’s got a long way to go, though, and it would be stretching to expect him to make the 53 as a rookie.

Gilkey (6-foot-5 7/8, 318) was a 34-game starter at Chadron State, primarily playing left tackle. He dabbled in basketball for the D-II school as a sophomore and racked up eight fouls in 16 minutes of play. Gilkey has short arms (32 5/8") but offers developmental athleticism and will probably end up at guard. He’s a small school lineman the Browns will hope to groom.

The versatile reserve is probably headed to injured reserve via the “waived/injured” route. Gilkey appeared in all 16 games a year ago, making one start.

Gilkey suffered a “significant” left knee injury in the preseason finale. He appeared in all 16 games for the Bucs last season including one start at center.

24-year-old Gilkey was seen as a promising prospect in Cleveland, and likely would have gone on the Browns’ practice squad had he cleared waivers. Instead, Gilkey goes to Tampa Bay, where he could eventually become a candidate to start at right guard. The Bucs’ right guard job remains wide open.

Gilkey was a seventh-round pick out of Chadron State last year. He’d primarily been playing guard this summer. Gilkey had a solid preseason finale, but it wasn’t enough to save his job as a versatile backup. He has good size at 6'6/315.
