VIRGINIA WATER, England -- Ken Schofield is considering stepping down as head of the PGA European Tour after nearly 30 years in the job.
Schofield, 57, said he would consider his future over the next few weeks before meeting on Dec. 11 with the European Tour board of directors.
Schofield succeeded John Jacobs as executive director on Jan. 1, 1975. He is expected to be succeeded by George O’Grady, his deputy executive director.
Mitchell Platts, director of corporate affairs and public relations, suggested Schofield would resign at the end of next season.
‘I can confirm he is considering moving to one side,’ Platts said. ‘But I would think that Ken will be working as hard in his 30th year with the Tour in 2004 as he did in his first year.’
‘Nothing lasts forever,’ Schofield said Tuesday in the Daily Telegraph. ‘I’ve been in the post for nearly 30 years and the right route now is for me to think about it over the next few weeks before deliberating with the board in December.’
