RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. ' Millions of youngsters across the country arent the only ones back in school these days. Its also Q-School time for those with aspirations of making it to the LPGA. One of those out here in the California desert is Michelle Wie, who is making her first trip to the madness of the qualifying tournament.
We all remember our parents sending us off to the school bus, with two lasting verbal warnings: Get good grades; and by all means, dont talk during class. Hopefully, many of us were able to honor both. It seems this week at Mission Hills, these credos remain true.
Through two rounds, Wie stands in second place at 9 under par, three shots off the pace being set by Sun-ju Ahn. After opening with 70 on Tuesday, Wie was nearly flawless on Wednesday, carding a blemish-free, 7-under 65 on the Palmer Course. Wies putter, which was inconsistent at times in Round 1, was dead on less than 24 hours later.
The field has been cut in half to the top 70 and ties, with the top 30 and ties after Friday moving on to the final stage later this year.
As she did Tuesday, Michelle rebuffed my attempt, and the attempts of other members in the media, to speak with her after her round. Perhaps she will let her clubs do the talking this week. But didnt we all want to ask that brilliant prodigy in school just how he or she aced the final exam, or scored 1560 on the SAT?
I, for one, am curious to know.
