Caddie LaCava modest in Tiger’s victory

During his speech at Sunday’s awards ceremony, Tiger Woods gave caddie Joe LaCava a solid assist for his second Players Championship.

LaCava caddied his former boss Fred Couples to two Players titles and on numerous occasions throughout the week the world No. 1 called his looper in to assist with a read on a particular putt.

“The (birdie putt) on 12 is greasy, left to right early, right to left late. It was quick and not an easy read. He said we nailed it; he’s always being nice. He could have done something different than what I said,” LaCava said. “He called me in a couple of times. They were all 8-footers, 6-footers. He’s just being nice.”

LaCava said if he helped Woods – who finished 35th in the field in putting and one-putted four of his last seven holes – in any way it was simply to provide a confidence boost on a course where he hadn’t played his best in recent years.

“As you say, he hasn’t had as much success here and I don’t think he’s as confident reading these greens,” LaCava said.
