Royal Troon in Scotland will host the British Open for the ninth time in 2016.
The R&A made the announcement Wednesday as match play began at the British Amateur on the Ayrshire links.
Troon last hosted the year’s third major in 2004, when Todd Hamilton defeated Ernie Els in a playoff for his lone major championship and second PGA Tour victory.
Americans have won the last six times Troon has hosted the British Open, dating back to Arnold Palmer’s 1962 win for his second major title that year. Tom Weiskopf (1973), Tom Watson ('82), Mark Calcavecchia ('89) and Justin Leonard ('97) round out the list of U.S. champions at Troon.
