Kevin McCarthy got the final seven outs Sunday, blanking the Twins to earn his first save of the season.
The Royals had a five-run lead and McCarthy was dealing, so Royals manager Ned Yost rolled with it. He gave up just two hits and didn’t walk a batter in his 2 1/3 innings, striking out two. The save was his first this year. There was a time he was pitching well enough -- and the rest of the Royals bullpen was pitching poorly enough -- that McCarthy could have been installed as the team’s closer, but that didn’t happen, and he’ll need a lot more outings like Sunday’s to get back into the manager’s good graces. McCarthy owns a 5.21 ERA, 1.79 WHIP with eight strikeouts and nine walks in 19 innings.
