Thorpe was a top-100 prospect several years ago but owns a rough 5.76 ERA in 59 1/3 career major league innings. And he had surrendered eight earned runs through just 1 2/3 frames this season at Triple-A St. Paul.

The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for Chris Archer. Thorpe, 26, holds a career 5.76 ERA over 24 appearances -- seven starts -- at the major league level.

Thorpe landed on the injured list with left shoulder soreness about a month ago and can now officially be ruled out for the season. The 25-year-old posted a 4.70 ERA in four starts and one relief appearance for Minnesota this season.

Thorpe was removed from Wednesday’s game against Cleveland with the sore shoulder. He’ll miss at least ten days, but there’s no timetable yet as to when the 25-year-old southpaw will be back on the bump.

The soreness is what prompted his early exit from Wednesday’s start against the Indians. Thorpe wound up being charged with two earned runs on a homer and three walks in just 1 1/3 innings of work.

Thorpe’s velocity was down from the jump, and he exited with a trainer after loading the bases on three walks in the top of the second inning. The 25-year-old left-hander had just been called up from Triple-A St. Paul on Wednesday morning.

Thorpe is going to start for the Twins on Wednesday afternoon against the Indians but probably shouldn’t be considered an attractive streaming option in fantasy. Nick Vincent has been designated for assignment in a corresponding roster move.

Thorpe, 25, holds an uninspiring 5.59 ERA, 1.71 WHIP, and 46/24 K/BB ratio in 58 career major league innings. There should be better fantasy streaming options on Wednesday’s full slate.

Thorpe surrendered four runs (one earned) over four innings in a spot start against the Angels in the front end of Thursday’s doubleheader. The 25-year-old southpaw owns a 3.86 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 5/4 K/BB ratio across 14 innings (four appearances, three starts) at the major-league level this season. He should get an extended look in the Twins’ starting rotation at some point later this season.

Thorpe gave up a solo homer to Phil Gosselin in the first inning, and then a three-run double to Gosselin an inning later. None of those runs on the latter hit were credited to Thorpe, but it’s safe to say that the 25-year-old southpaw didn’t pitch well with two walks and no strikeouts. Another start hasn’t been scheduled for Thorpe, but he could make a start against Cleveland over the weekend.
