Mark Zagunis has signed with the Lancaster Barnstormers of the independent Atlantic League.
Zagunis opted out of the pandemic-shortened 2020 season and didn’t play in the 2021 campaign either. The 29-year-old outfielder posted a pedestrian .200/.313/.275 triple-slash line with two steals in 64 plate appearances over 42 games between 2017 and 2019 with the Cubs at the major-league level.

Cubs placed OF Mark Zagunis on the restricted list.
Zagunis has opted out of the 2020 season. The 27-year-old outfielder was doubtful to get much use anyway as a career .200/.313/.273 hitter at the major league level.

Cubs sent OF Mark Zagunis outright to Triple-A Iowa.
Zagunis cleared waivers after being designated for assignment and will remain in the organization as outfield depth.
  • MLB Outfield #3
Cubs designated OF Mark Zagunis for assignment.
The Cubs needed to free up a spot on the 40-man roster for Ben Zobrist’s return, and Zagunis was the odd-man out. The 26-year-old has appeared in 30 games at the big league level this season, hitting .250/.325/.333 with no homers, five RBI and a 16/4 K/BB ratio across 40 plate appearances. There’s a decent chance that he’ll pass through waivers unclaimed and continue to function as depth for the Cubs.

Zagunis served as the 26th man for the Cubs in Sunday’s game against the Pirates in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. He has batted .250/.325/.333 in 30 games this season at the major league level.
  • MLB Outfield #3
Cubs recalled OF Mark Zagunis from Triple-A Iowa.
Zagunis will be the team’s 26th man for Sunday’s game against the Pirates in Williamsport. He’ll surely be sent back down after the contest.
  • MLB Outfield #3
Cubs optioned OF Mark Zagunis to Triple-A Iowa.
The backup outfielder wasn’t getting many at-bats and the Cubs feel his development is better served by getting regular playing time in the minors. He had a .257 batting average with no homers and five RBI in 39 plate appearances.
  • FA Right Fielder #22
Jason Heyward is not in the Blue Jays’ lineup Sunday.
Heyward and Kyle Schwarber are both taking a seat with the Diamondbacks throwing lefty Robbie Ray. David Bote and Mark Zagunis are getting starts.
  • FA Right Fielder #22
Jason Heyward is not in the Cubs’ lineup Friday.
The red-hot Heyward is taking a seat with the Angels throwing lefty Tyler Skaggs. Mark Zagunis is in right field. Ben Zobrist is also on the bench, with David Bote getting a start at second base.
  • FA Left Fielder #12
Kyle Schwarber is out of the Cubs’ starting lineup on Monday night against the Braves.
Schwarber homered on both Saturday and Sunday against the Rangers, but he’ll take a seat Monday with the Braves starting left-hander Sean Newcomb. Mark Zagunis is playing left field and batting ninth. Ben Zobrist is also out of the lineup for Chicago, with David Bote covering second base.
