Giants signed LHP Adam Pettyjohn to a minor league contract.
Pettyjohn, who missed 2002 after having his colon removed due to colitis, resumed pitching in the minors in June and had a 4.00 ERA in 10 starts and nine relief appearances for Double-A. He’s someone to root for, but it’s not very likely that he’ll make it back to the majors with the Giants.
  • INT Third Base Coach
Reds signed 1B Andy Phillips, RHP Jim Brower, LHP Adam Pettyjohn, INF Andy Green and INF Jolbert Cabrera to minor league contracts and invited them to spring training.
No one here should make the team. Green is back in the U.S. after flopping in Japan last year. It’s surprising Phillips couldn’t find a better fit. The Reds have indicated that they’re going with Jeff Keppinger as their first baseman against left-handers. Unless an Edwin Encarnacion trade opens up third base for Keppinger to play regularly, then there’s not going to be any room for Phillips on the bench.

Mets signed LHP Adam Pettyjohn to a minor league contract and assigned him to Triple-A Buffalo.
Pettyjohn, 32, was released by the Reds on July 24. He was 1-6 with a 4.86 ERA in 20 games with Louisville. The veteran has had a couple cups of coffee in the majors, compiling a 1-7 record and 6.65 ERA in 19 appearances (10 starts). He’ll function as organizational depth.

Reds purchased the contract of LHP Adam Pettyjohn from Triple-A Louisville.
Pettyjohn went 1-6 with the Tigers as a rookie in 2001, missed the next season with colitis and ended up pitching in indy ball for more than a year. It’s nice to see him get a second cup of coffee now as a 31-year-old, but he shouldn’t be a candidate for a spot on next year’s team. He finished 15-6 with a 4.59 ERA, 188 H and 95/43 K/BB in 174 1/3 IP for Louisville.
  • MLB Relief Pitcher #36
Edinson Volquez will have his final turn skipped because of a sore right knee.
That works out well. Volquez’s arm receives a bit of a break, and Adam Pettyjohn gets to make a spot start. Volquez finishes 17-6 with a 3.21 ERA. He currently ranks second in the NL with 206 strikeouts, but Chad Billingsley (199), Johan Santana (197), Dan Haren (197) and Cole Hamels (196) could all have a shot to pass him.
  • NYM Outfield
Reds sent outfielder Jolbert Cabrera, RHP Jon Adkins and LHP Adam Pettyjohn outright to Triple-A Louisville.
The 35-year-old Cabrera revived his career this season by hitting .252/.310/.400 in 115 at-bats for the Reds. It was his first major league action since 2004. He’s a free agent now, but Cincinnati could re-sign him to a minor league deal.

Adam Pettyjohn made his first appearance since 2001 yesterday, giving up three runs in two innings for Double-A Erie.
Pettyjohn missed last season due to colitis. The Tigers released him in spring training but re-signed him to a minor league contract. He’ll probably spend the rest of the year in the minors.
  • NYM Relief Pitcher
Tigers released LHP Adam Pettyjohn, LHP Rafael Roque and 1B Kevin Barker.
Pettyjohn missed last season due to colitis and wasn’t given a chance to win a job this spring. He’ll end up in Triple-A with another team.

Athletics acquired LHP Adam Pettyjohn from the Giants for cash considerations and assigned him to Triple-A Sacramento.
Pettyjohn had a 5.42 ERA in 14 starts and seven relief appearances for Triple-A Fresno. He’s just being acquired for minor league depth.
