Alex Liddi went 2-for-4 and hit his first big-league homer versus the Indians on Monday.
Liddi had been 1-for-12 with seven strikeouts since his callup. His game still needs some polish, so he’ll head back to Triple-A next year. His power is promising, though.
  • KC 1st Baseman
Mariners manager Eric Wedge said Friday that Alex Liddi may soon get a look in the outfield.
Liddi is hitting .333 (11-for-33) this season and has hit safely in each of his last six games, so Mariners’ manager Eric Wedge wants to find a way to get him into the lineup. “At some point in time, we’ll have him out there in left field,” said Wedge. “He goes all over the place. First, second, short, third and he’s been in the outfield, too.” Liddi has experience at both corner infield positions and even played some shortstop in the minors, but he has never played the outfield in a professional game. The 23-year-old has been tracking balls and taking some flies during batting practice recently, so he could get his first look soon.
  • FA Catcher #10
Jesus Montero will start behind the plate Tuesday night against the Rays.
This will be Montero’s seventh appearance (sixth start) at catcher this season. He should be able to reach 10 games started while Miguel Olivo (groin) is on the disabled list and figures to be a pretty solid lock to reach 20 games started before the season is out. Dustin Ackley will serve as the DH Tuesday while Kyle Seager plays second base and Alex Liddi plays third. John Jaso is taking a seat against the left-hander Matt Moore, but he should be in there against most right-handed starters.
  • INT 1st Baseman #46
Justin Smoak (hamstring) is back in Wednesday’s lineup against the Tigers.
Smoak was out of the lineup Tuesday in order to rest his sore hamstring. Alex Liddi will slide over to third base while Kyle Seager sits.
  • INT 1st Baseman #46
Justin Smoak is not in Tuesday’s lineup against the Tigers.
No word yet on the reason for his absence, but he has been dealing with a sore hamstring recently. Alex Liddi will make the start at first base and bat sixth against right-hander Max Scherzer.
  • KC 1st Baseman
Alex Liddi had three hits, including his first home run of the season, in the Mariners 7-4 victory over the Tigers on Tuesday.
Liddi finished the night 3-for-5 with the aforementioned solo home run off of Colin Balester. He also stole his first base of the season, on the back-end of a double steal with Ichiro Suzuki. He’s hitting an impressive .368 on the season, and could see more starts at first base while Justin Smoak gets himself right physically.
  • KC 1st Baseman
Alex Liddi went 1-for-3 with an RBI double in Sunday’s loss to the White Sox.
Liddi got a spot-start at first base in place of a resting Justin Smoak. It’s just the fourth time the power-hitting prospect has been in the lineup this season. Liddi is merely someone to monitor, even for AL-only specialists.
  • SEA Third Base Coach #15
Kyle Seager is not in the Mariners’ starting lineup Friday against the Blue Jays.
Alex Liddi has homered in two out of his last three games, so M’s manager Eric Wedge wants to keep his hot bat in the lineup. Seager should be back in there against right-hander Brandon Morrow.
  • LAD Third Base Coach
Chone Figgins is not in Friday’s lineup against the Twins.
Batting .189/.250/.305 on the year, Figgins is mired in a 1-for-23 slump. Alex Liddi will start in his place, which could become an increasingly common occurrence if Seattle’s $36 million man doesn’t soon show some signs of life.
  • LAD Third Base Coach
Mariners manager Eric Wedge has announced Chone Figgins will no longer be an everyday player, and that Dustin Ackley will take over as Seattle’s leadoff hitter.
It’s a move that’s been three years in the making. Figgins has hit an absurdly poor .231/.304/.287 while stealing just 55 bases in 267 games since signing a four-year, $36 million deal in December 2009. He’s hitting .189/.250/.305 through 108 plate appearances this season. Kyle Seager and Alex Liddi should split time at third going forward. The struggling Ackley’s fantasy value gets a nice boost from his bump in the lineup. Figgins may never get another chance to be an everyday player.
