Braves recalled catcher Brayan Pena from Triple-A Richmond.
Pena will get the occasional start with Johnny Estrada on the DL, but Brian McCann will act as the Braves’ primary catcher.

Braves optioned catcher Brayan Pena to Triple-A Richmond.
Pena hit .321/.345/.464 in 28 at-bats while Brian McCann was out. He’ll be back next time the Braves need a catcher.

Braves recalled catcher Brayan Pena from Triple-A Richmond
It looks like Brian McCann will avoid the disabled list, but the Braves needed someone to aid Todd Pratt with catching chores for a few days. Pena will return to the minors once McCann is healthy.

Braves recalled catcher Brayan Pena from Triple-A Richmond.
Pena batted .302/.342/.372 in 325 at-bats for Richmond. He probably needed to do better in order to prevent the Braves from keeping Todd Pratt or bringing in another veteran backup for Brian McCann next year.

Salvador Perez is scheduled to undergo left knee surgery Friday in Los Angeles.
Perez suffered a left lateral meniscus tear while warming up Jonathan Sanchez before Tuesday’s game. Royals’ general manager Dayton Moore said Wednesday that the best-case scenario is that he’ll miss 3-4 weeks, but we’ll likely have a more definitive timeline after the surgery. Brayan Pena will fill as the starting catcher for now while Max Ramirez is the favorite to serve as the backup.

Salvador Perez was diagnosed with a left lateral meniscus tear and will require surgery.
Tough break for the 21-year-old backstop, who injured the knee during warm-ups on Tuesday. No word yet on how long he’ll be sidelined, but Brayan Pena figures to spend the first few weeks of season as the Royals’ starting catcher.
  • Royals manager Ned Yost currently has Humberto Quintero lined up to catch three of every five games, with Brayan Pena catching the other two.
Quintero will be behind the plate when Luke Hochevar, Jonathan Sanchez and Danny Duffy pitch, while Pena will be back there when it’s Bruce Chen and Luis Mendoza on the mound. “I don’t want anybody catching more than two days in a row,” Yost said. “I’m trying to keep a balance. I like Quintero with Hoch, Sánchez and Duffy because he’s more of a veteran presence with those guys. I like Peña with Bruce because (Chen) has a really good idea of what he wants to do, and so does Mendoza.” Neither player would be terribly appealing for fantasy purposes even if they were playing every day, so, needless to say, they can be ignored given their part-time roles.
  • Humberto Quintero will start in Saturday’s game against the Angels.
The Royals went with Brayan Pena in the season opener, but the two figure to split playing time until Salvador Perez (knee) is ready to return. Continue to ignore both players in all formats.

The Royals have agreed to a one-year contract with catcher Brayan Pena, avoiding arbitration.
He’ll make $875,000 in 2012. Pena batted just .248/.288/.338 in 240 plate appearances last season, but the Royals like his defense and his veteran presence behind young backstop Salvador Perez.

Bryan Pena went 1-for-3 with an RBI double and a run scored in Friday’s loss to the Tigers.
Pena has seen his playing time severely limited recently with the return of Salvador Perez to the lineup. He’s now hitting .269 with one homer and 16 RBI in 134 at-bats on the year. While he’s never held much value outside of AL-only leagues when he was starting, he shouldn’t be started in any format with Perez back in tow.
