Brent Brewer doubled twice, walked three times and scored five runs for low Single-A West Virginia on Friday.
Brewer was hitting just .160 in 50 at-bats before one of his best games as a pro. The 20-year-old shortstop is repeating the Sally League after hitting .251/.315/.390 with 170 strikeouts in 518 at-bats last season. There’s a lot to like about his tools, but he obviously has a lot to work on.

Brent Brewer launched a pair of solo homers Thursday for the Javelinas of the AFL.
Brewer went 9-for-30 with three homers, three doubles and two steals in the AFL. He ended up at .236/.307/.334 for two A-ball teams last season, but he’s still just 20 years old and he doesn’t lack for tools. Unfortuantely, there’s not much chance of him staying at shortstop when he has J.J. Hardy and Alcides Escobar ahead of him.

Brent Brewer is walking away from baseball to accept a football scholarship at the University of Tennessee.
Milwaukee spent $600,000 on this 2006 second-round pick, but watched him hit only .240 over 420 minor league games. Brewer was obviously miles away from becoming an actual Brewer, as his myriad tools never fully developed.
