Carlos Beltrán and Andruw Jones were elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame, it was announced Tuesday.
Beltrán, who hit .279/.350/.486 with 435 homers and 312 steals over 20 big-league seasons, most likely would have been a first-ballot HOFer if not for the cheating scandal that arose his world championship season with the Astros in 2017. As is, the nine-time All-Star had to wait until his fourth year of eligibility, receiving 84.2% of the vote. Jones, who topped the 75% threshold with 78.4% of the vote, is getting in on his ninth try after barely clinging to the ballot with 7.3% and 7.5% percent of the vote in his first two years. Jones won 10 straight Gold Gloves with the Braves from 1988-97 and finished his career with a .254/.337/.486 line and 434 homers in 17 seasons. Beltran and Jones will be officially inducted alongside Jeff Kent in Cooperstown on July 26. Among those falling short of the 75% needed for induction this year were Chase Utley (59.1%), Andy Pettitte (48.5%), Felix Hernández (46.1%) and Alex Rodríguez (40.0%). Manny Ramírez got 38.8% in his final year of eligibility. Cole Hamels was the only ballot newcomer who will remain in play next year, having debuted at 23.8%. Next year’s top newcomers will be Buster Posey, Jon Lester, Ryan Zimmerman and Brett Gardner.
  • NYM General Manager
According to Andrew Marchand, Jon Heyman and Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Mets are hiring former manager Carlos Beltran as a special assistant to general manager Billy Eppler.
The hiring hasn’t been officially announced by the Mets, but Beltran has already stepped down from his on-air role with the YES Network. The 45-year-old former big leaguer stepped down as Mets manager nearly three years ago during the fallout from the Astros sign-stealing scandal, resigning before ever managing a game for New York. It’s unclear whether Beltran will ever get another opportunity in a major-league dugout again, but this is at least a big step towards a second chance in baseball.

The latest Carlos Beltran rumor has him headed to Texas for Juan Gonzalez and Michael Young.
The Royals do have interest in Young, but Gonzalez they would only be renting for a run at winning this season, which has to be considered a long shot. So by spring training, the deal will have boiled down to Beltran for Young, and as one Royals’ exec put it, ''Does that make sense?’'

Carlos Beltran needs two homers in the final five games to become the fourth member of the 40/40 club.
He’d be the first one to do it while switching teams, not to mention leagues, during that season.

Astros’ manager Phil Garner doesn’t expect Carlos Beltran to miss any games as a result of being hit on the right elbow during last night’s game.
He should be back in the lineup this afternoon.

The Royals seem convinced that it makes more sense to trade Carlos Beltran for non-pitching prospects who can mature along with the club’s young pitching staff.
This news comes despite GM Allard Baird’s belief that the new labor agreement should allow the Royals to keep the core of their young roster intact in coming years. With Alexis Gomez coming up behind Beltran, and young pitchers in place, management may be right about a trade. They shouldn’t expect it to go over well in the court of public opinion, however, especially with Beltran saying yesterday he’d like to sign a long-term contract.

Astros owner Drayton McLane doesn’t want to spend much more time waiting on free agent Carlos Beltran.
“I’m disappointed,” McLane said. “I sure thought something would happen at the winter meetings. That’s (agent Scott Boras’) motif.” McLane said there have been no additional talks with Boras since the end of the winter meetings, but he hopes that changes soon. Even though there are only two suitors -- the Astros and the Yankees -- right now, Beltran could remain a free agent into next month.

Carlos Beltran’s agent, Scott Boras, is expected to travel for face-to-face meetings with Yankees owner George Steinbrenner and Astros owner Drayton McLane next week.
At the moment, it looks like Beltran’s decision will come down to the Astros and Yankees. The Cubs, Tigers and Mets could also make bids, but they’re longshots.

The Dodgers should have plenty of money to spend if the Randy Johnson trade goes through, but they probably won’t make a run at Carlos Beltran.
“It’s been made perfectly clear to us that we probably needn’t bother,” Dodgers GM Paul DePodesta said of Beltran. “He has interested parties for places he’d rather be.” Maybe J.D. Drew instead? Only the lack of durability makes him a significant downgrade from Beltran. Of course, that is a big factor.

The Mets have been discussing a plan to pursue Carlos Beltran, Newsday reports.
No offer has been presented. The Mets will probably wait and see what happens with Carlos Delgado, a player they have a much better chance of landing.
