Rosa

Rosa was acquired from the Royals on May 1 for young shortstop Reynaldo Navarro. The right-hander had a 3.65 ERA and a 10/7 K/BB ratio in 12 1/3 innings at Triple-A Omaha before the trade and posted four scoreless innings at Triple-A Reno to earn the call-up to Arizona.

Rosa is regarded as one of the organization’s top pitching prospects, but he compiled a 4.56 ERA and 1.42 WHIP in 43 appearances out of Omaha’s bullpen this season. On the bright side, he averaged an eye-popping 10.1 K/9. The 24-year-old right-hander made two appearances for the big club in June of last season, allowing one run over 3 1/3 innings.

The Royals don’t think it’s serious, but are smart to take it cautiously with one of their top prospects. He’s scheduled to pitch a simulated game next week.

Rosa returned in mid-August after four weeks off, but made just two appearances before being shut down again. He would have been in line for a callup. Now the Royals have to be concerned about his status for next year.

A bizarre way to handle one of the club’s top prospects. Rosa allowed one run in 3 1/3 innings of relief during his 10 days with the Royals.

One fewer earned run than he allowed in 45 innings for Double-A Arkansas. It seems Rosa will need some time to adjust to the PCL, but he’ll be a candidate to debut for the Royals in the second half.

Rosa has a 1.61 ERA in five starts. Last year, he opened the season with a 0.39 ERA in four starts in high-A Wilmington, earning him his promotion to the Texas League, where he posted a 4.36 ERA the rest of the way. The 23-year-old seems to have figured out Double-A hitters now, but the Royals still shouldn’t be quick to promote him given his history.

The Royals are bringing up one of their best SP prospects to pitch in relief on a team going nowhere. Rosa had a 3.96 ERA in five starts since moving up to Triple-A. Before that, he had a 1.20 ERA in eight starts in Double-A. He has a chance to be a quality starter, but he has a history of arm problems and having him change roles in the middle of the season might not work out as hoped.

It was reported that a deal fell apart because the Marlins were concerned about the health of the pitcher they would get in return. Rosa, one of the Royals’ top pitching prospects, was shut down twice in the second half due to what was called a strained elbow.

Rosa, 25, allowed four runs in 10 2/3 innings as a September call-up last season. It wasn’t too long ago that Rosa was one of the organization’s most promising prospects, but is now a full-time reliever. He averaged an impressive 10.1 K/9 with Triple-A Omaha last season, so even though he was sent down, don’t discount him making an impact in the majors at some point this season.
