Carlos Silva, who has pitched well in his last two starts but left both early because of a neck strain, says he’ll be fine today.
What else would he say? Exercise caution.

The Twins have offered arbitration-eligible right-hander Carlos Silva about $4 million over two years.
That’s not going to be enough. Silva figures to make more than $2 million in his first year of arbitration.
  • BOS Starting Pitcher
The Twins are still trying to finalize a multiyear deal with Carlos Silva.
Of the group of Johan Santana, Silva and Kyle Lohse, Silva is the pitcher most likely to avoid arbitration with Minnesota. He could get a two-year deal.
  • BOS Starting Pitcher
Carlos Silva was unavailable last night because of the flu.
Silva remained at the hotel. He’s day-to-day.

Carlos Silva appealed his six-game suspension and Todd Pratt and Jose Mesa appealed their fines yesterday for their roles in a bench-clearing brawl June 13 in Cincinnati.
Manager Larry Bowa said he expected the rulings to come Wednesday or Thursday, which means Silva will be available to pitch until the All-Star break.
  • BOS Starting Pitcher
Carlos Silva didn’t come back out for the eighth inning today because of tightness in his knee.
Silva’s right knee remains a problem, but it doesn’t look like it’s going to cause him to miss any time right now. Perhaps if the Twins are eliminated from contention, he’ll be shut down early next month.
  • BOS Starting Pitcher
Carlos Silva worked seven innings and allowed one run today in the Twins’ 2-1 victory over the A’s.
The win went to Juan Rincon after Matthew LeCroy singled in Joe Mauer in the top of the ninth. All seven hits Silva gave up were singles. He doesn’t have a win since the All-Star break, but that’s mostly due to run support.
  • BOS Starting Pitcher
Carlos Silva will need surgery on his right knee after the season because of a torn meniscus. He can’t run between starts and the coaching staff watches his pitch count when it reaches 80 because of concern about his stamina.
Even with the knee injury Silva has a 2.60 ERA over his past seven starts.
  • BOS Starting Pitcher
Carlos Silva won for the first time since July 4 by allowing four runs -- three earned -- in seven innings against the Mariners tonight.
Silva had allowed two earned runs or fewer in six of his seven starts since his previous victory. This was his next to worst outing of the bunch.
  • BOS Starting Pitcher
Carlos Silva has walked only eight batters in 166 2/3 innings this season for an average of .432 walks per nine innings.
If his season ended today he would place seventh all-time on the fewest walks per nine innings during a season list.
