Charlie Manning and Brian Sanches combined to give up seven runs in two-thirds of an inning Saturday against the Rangers.
Both got one out. Sanches allowed four runs, taking his ERA to 7.36. It’s hard to believe both minor league veterans are still in the majors while Chris Schroder remains stuck in Triple-A.

S=Nationals selected the contract of LHP Charlie Manning from Triple-A Columbus.
The 29-year-old is making his major league debut. He was signed by the team as a minor league free agent this offseason, but had posted a 1.95 ERA with 34 strikeouts in 27 2/3 innings pitched at Triple-A. He’ll join the bullpen.

Cardinals claimed LHP Charlie Manning off waivers from the Nationals.
Manning made his MLB debut as a 29-year-old this season, going 1-3 with a 5.14 ERA and 37/31 K/BB ratio in 42 innings out of the Nationals’ bullpen. His minor league resume isn’t especially impressive and he struggles to throw strikes, so he’s little more than a situational left-hander.

Cardinals agreed to terms with LHP Dennys Reyes, who had been with the Twins, on a two-year, $3 million contract.
Reyes, 31, posted a 2.23 ERA in 46 1/3 innings last season, and held lefties to a .202/.250/.287 line. He provides a much better left-handed bullpen option than Royce Ring or Charlie Manning. Those two are now in danger of not making the club.

Cardinals optioned OF Brian Barton, RHP Mitchell Boggs, LHP Charlie Manning and RHP Matt Scherer to Triple-A Memphis; reassigned RHP Clayton Mortensen, RHP Adam Ottavino, INF Allen Craig and RHP Jess Todd to minor league camp.
Barton made a ton of sense for a team that’s practically certain to go with left-handed hitters in both left and center, but manager Tony La Russa seemed down on him from the very start of the spring or maybe dating all of the way back to last year. He turns 27 next month, so it’s not like he needs to be playing regularly in the minors. He hit .192/.323/.538 in 26 at-bats this spring. Manning, who was supposed to be competing with Royce Ring for one spot in the pen, had his chances of making the team wrecked by the Dennys Reyes signing.

Yankees acquired LHP Charlie Manning and a player to be named from the Reds for LHP Gabe White.
The Yankees just wanted to dump White. In the trade, they are reacquiring a pitcher they gave up in the Aaron Boone deal last year. Manning, a 2001 ninth-round pick, had a 5.12 ERA in 13 starts for Double-A Chattanooga. He has a slight chance of becoming a major league reliever.
