Nationals purchased the contract of RHP Chris Schroder from Triple-A New Orleans.
He takes Livan Hernandez’s roster spot. Schroder, who turns 28 this month, will be making his major league debut after posting a 1.52 ERA in 47 1/3 innings of relief for Triple-A New Orleans. He’s probably not going to be a long-term fit in the bullpen, but his numbers have earned him the opportunity.

Nationals recalled RHP Chris Schroder from Triple-A Columbus.
Schroeder spent the final two months of last season in the Washington pen, amassing a 6.35 ERA. He had a 1.69 ERA and a 45/18 K/BB ratio in 32 innings for Columbus this season, earning him another chance. If the command is there, he’ll be an asset in the middle innings.

Athletics designated RHP Chris Schroder for assignment.
Schroder’s departure makes room on the 40-man roster for newly-acquired reliever Dan Giese. The A’s now have 10 days to waive, trade or release Schroder, who was originally slated for Triple-A Sacramento before posting a 9.90 ERA this spring.

Athletics optioned RHP Chris Schroder to Triple-A Sacramento.
Oakland needed the roster spot to make room for the returning Nomar Garciaparra.

Athletics purchased the contract of RHP Chris Schroder from Triple-A Sacramento.
Schroder struggled this spring, posting a 9.90 ERA, but seems to have mastered his command at the Triple-A level. He was 2-1 with a 2.37 ERA and three saves in 19 innings for Sacramento. The A’s are likely to use him in middle relief.
  • Athletics optioned OF Aaron Cunningham, INF Gregorio Petit and RHP Chris Schroder to Triple-A Sacramento; reassigned RHP Edgar Gonzalez, C Joel Galarraga and INF Corey Wimberly to minor league camp.
Maybe if Ryan Sweeney’s injury put him on the DL, Cunningham could have made the A’s. With everyone healthy, he didn’t have a shot. However, he may be next in line for regular playing time if someone goes down. Petit lost his little battle with Cliff Pennington, but there’s not going to be room for Pennington either unless Bobby Crosby is traded. Gonzalez, who likely would have had a rotation spot with a decent spring, gave up 17 runs and 26 hits in 14 innings.

Nationals recalled RHP Chris Schroder from Triple-A Columbus.
His third time up this season. Schroder has allowed one run in four innings during his stints in the majors.

    Nationals outrighted RHP Chris Schroder.
The Nats are likely looking to clear up some roster space, so they outrighted two 30-year-olds who have had success in the minors but have never stuck in the majors. Schroder had a 4.46 ERA with 85 strikeouts in 78 2/3 innings during his stints with the Nationals. He was last in the majors in May.

These things usually do tend to work out. Schroder, of course, deserved to be in the bullpen all along, and now that Chad Cordero is hurting, the Nationals needed him back. He’ll still be a candidate to be sent down when Shawn Hill comes off the DL, but he’s going to spend most of the year in the majors.

Chris Schroder worked a one-two-three inning Sunday and has a 2.16 ERA in 8 1/3 innings.
Schroder had a 3.18 ERA in 45 1/3 innings for the Nats last year, but because he has options remaining, he’s not guaranteed anything right now. Chad Cordero, Jon Rauch, Luis Ayala, Jesus Colome and Ray King seem to be have jobs locked up, and Saul Rivera is the clear favorite for the sixth spot. That leaves one opening for Schroder or Joel Hanrahan, who is out of options. Since Hanrahan has impressed in camp, the Nationals may opt to stash Schroder away in Triple-A initially.
