Parker Messick allowed one run over three innings during Sunday’s regular-season finale against the Royals.

Messick put the finishing touches on a fabulous debut season that has him in conversation to wrestle the AL Rookie of the Year Award from frontrunner Kevin McGonigle. He gave up six hits, struck out two and only issued one walk. The 25-year-old southpaw will finish as a top-10 fantasy starter on the strength of a pristine 2.56 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 193/49 K/BB ratio across 186 1/3 innings over 32 starts. He figures to take the ball to kick off Cleveland’s upcoming AL Division Series matchup next week.

José Ramírez is not in the Guardians’ starting lineup for Sunday’s regular season finale against the Royals.

With the American League Central wrapped up, Guardians’ skipper Stephen Vogt is using Sunday as an opportunity to give several of his regulars a day off including Ramírez, Steven Kwan, Chase DeLauter, Patrick Bailey and Brayan Rocchio.

Guardians recalled RHP Austin Peterson from Triple-A Columbus.

Peterson rejoins the Guardians for the final day of the regular season to provide an extra option out of the bullpen that’s capable of working multiple innings. The 27-year-old righty has made just one appearance with the Guardians this season, striking out three batters over two scoreless innings.

Guardians optioned RHP Craig Yoho to Triple-A Columbus.

Yoho gave up two runs on three hits in just 1/3 of an inning on Saturday, which appears to have earned him a demotion back to Triple-A. The 26-year-old righty registered a 6.87 ERA, 1.64 WHIP and a 23/10 K/BB ratio over 18 1/3 innings in 19 appearances with the Guardians.
Parker Messick

Although they’ve clinched the AL Central, Parker Messick will start Sunday against the Royals.

The Guardians won’t play again until Saturday, so Messick will throw a few innings in order to stay fresh. He’ll then start Game 1 or 2 of the ALDS against the Astros, Rangers or White Sox.

Brayan Rocchio went 3-for-4 with a pair of solo homers Saturday as the Guardians topped the Royals 11-5.

With the White Sox losing, the Guardians have clinched the AL Central and a bye through to the ALDS. Rocchio homered from both sides of the plate. His first just made it out down the left field line, while the second, to right, had a little more room to spare. Neither were barrels, though. It’s Rocchio’s second two-homer game of the month, as well as his second in 434 career games dating back to 2023. He has more homers (15) and steals (20) this year than in his previous 281 games over his first two-plus seasons (13 homers, 18 steals).

Tanner Bibee yielded three runs in six innings Saturday in a win over the Royals.

All of the runs came in the first, which featured two doubles and two singles. Bibee ended up with a quality start anyway, striking out six, and got the victory to improve to 7-15 with a 4.36 ERA. He’ll next work in the ALDS against the winner of the AL West or the White Sox.
Patrick Bailey

Patrick Bailey hit his ninth and 10th homers Saturday versus the Royals.

Bailey his balls 342 and 380 feet for his first career two-homer game. He’s hit an adequate .231/.296/.396 with nine homers in 81 games since arriving from San Francisco in May. He was at .146/.213/.183 in 30 games when he was traded.
Angel Martínez

CLE Left Fielder #1

Angel Martínez went 2-for-5 with a double and four RBI in a 12-9 win on Friday against the Royals.

The Guardians’ bats showed impressive restraint in a game that the Royals completely gave away. Starter Noah Cameron walked four batters in five innings. Then, their bullpen walked an unbelievable nine batters between the eighth and ninth. Nate Pearson was the primary culprit with four free passes in the final frame. Then, Nolan Hoffman walked two more before Martínez socked a two-run double to finish off a five-run ninth inning. Red-hot heading into the postseason, he has a .301/.345/.573 slash line with six home runs over his last 30 games.
Gavin Williams

CLE Starting Pitcher #32

Gavin Williams allowed five hits and four runs with four walks and four strikeouts over 3 1/3 innings in a no-decision against the Royals on Friday.

Luckily bailed on by his lineup – and the Royals’ brutal relief pitching – Williams did not answer the bell in this pivotal start as a budding ace should. Gifted three runs over the first two innings, he immediately gave them all back and never found a rhythm. Of the 18 batters he faced, only nine saw a first pitch strike and Williams was forced to play catch-up all game. All in all, this was an ugly start and the Guardians hope Williams will be able to put it behind him before he takes the ball in the playoffs.
