Eppley

Eppley was claimed off waivers from the Rangers earlier this month and has been unscored upon while striking out nine over 6 1/3 innings at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He’ll be used in middle relief.

The move clears a spot on the 25-man roster for D.J. Mitchell. Eppley, 26, was claimed off waivers from the Rangers earlier this month and posted a 1.69 ERA in four appearances with the Yankees. Mitchell, of course, is expected to be used in long relief.

The move opens up a spot on the Rangers’ 40-man roster. Eppley posted an 8.00 ERA over 10 appearances with the big club last season and had a 3.90 ERA and 55/34 K/BB ratio over 55 1/3 innings with Triple-A Round Rock. There’s a chance he makes it through waivers unclaimed.

He’s posted a 4.76 ERA and 1.41 WHIP over five appearances covering a couple stints with the big club. Eppley will likely get another shot later this season.

Eppley will provide some bullpen depth with Mariano Rivera (knee) down. In four appearances with the Yankees earlier this season, he posted a 1.69 ERA.

Eppley was designated for assignment by Texas earlier this week. The 26-year-old righty registered a 3.90 ERA across 55 1/3 innings last year at Triple-A Round Rock.

Eppley will function as a middle reliever while David Robertson recovers from his left oblique strain.

On the day CC Sabathia was placed on the disabled list, the Yankees’ rotation was dealt another blow on the injury front. Pettitte attempted to stay in at first, but was pulled from the game after throwing a warm-up pitch. He allowed three hits and one walk while striking out seven over four-plus innings before being replaced by Cody Eppley.

He’ll take the roster spot of Eduardo Nunez. The Yankees are going with 12 pitchers and 13 position players for their ALCS matchup against the Tigers.

Eppley was released by the Yankees last week after posting an 8.53 ERA in 19 innings of relief at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The right-hander will probably struggle to reach the major league level with the Twins.
